Avoiding the White Screen of Death?

26 replies · 11,312 views · Started 21 September 2004

Hey all,

I'm *quite* new to this forum, I made a good few posts in my first 2 days.

I'm waiting on my N-Gage ( original of course  ) to arrive, it's officially been sent as of today, says my ebay seller. 🙄

I've been reading around, especially this forum, and been concerned at the fact that many N-Gage and specifically QD users seem to be experiencing a lot of white screen of death situations.

I would like to know, as much advice as possible, how I can prevent this from happening to my N-Gage that will be arriving soon.

Things I've heard are that it is caused by letting phone memory fill up, and not "Safely removing hardware" when removing a card reader or the MMC from the card reader, and that you have to go to a Nokia Service Centre (luckily there's one within a few miles of me) to aid the problem.

I think it's something to do with a corrupt memory card as said above, but if it did happen - would somehow managing to format the memory card fix it and would the device boot up normally again? Would using "Safe Mode" work and allow me to format the card?

I really need someone to clarify the facts about W.S.O.D. :con?

Thanks

jas0nuk 😊

It has nothing to do with the MMC card.
Everything with the internal phone memory, the problem occurs when transfering big files to the phone without using PC Suite.
If you just use regular Bluetooth to send it will end up in the Inbox, if the file is to big the phone will crash and won't reboot because it's internal memory is full!

It's very easy to avoid, use PC Suite!!! to transfer files over bluetooth!

Using that "MCE3650forNGAGE", which apparently changes the message store to E: and makes the weird memory card icon appear on Messaging as it does on other phones, that should work shouldn't it?

Also is there any way to fix the problem? Or is Nokia Service Centre the only option? I've heard a trick about leaving battery/sim/mmc out for 5 hours - does that work too?

Don't have that program, but that should work ... (What is peoples problem with just using PC Suite????)

The trick works sometimes and most of the times only once.

Yes, I have tried it on my new N-Gage and it works a treat.

Also, I needed the prog. because of friends sending me files. I know of a few N-Gage's of my mates that are messed up because of exchanging big files (mp3's etc) - I can't exactly use PC Suite wherever I am, can I?

Well im 'kinda' glad it's not just me, but i've just found out the hard way about the memory full problem. I friend transferred an mp3 to my phone, and it downloaded to the internal memory (and annoyingly not to the 256Mb of free space of the memory card!) and it complained about having no space left, i cleared a few things off and rebooted the phone (hoping to clear any cache that it might be using) and all i get is the nokia logo for a few seconds, it crashes then loops. :frown:

What are my options to revive it? I bought it in Australia and I don't fancy flying 11,000 miles to take it back!

What exactly is the 'MCE3650forNGAGE' program and what does it do? I've had a search for it and the only reference i can find to it points to this topic!

Cheers for the help guys,
Liam

What is "MCE3650forNGAGE"? A software or a Tweak?

If its freeware, where can I download it from? I searched on google, but no help.

MCE3650forNGAGE is a tweak that changes the message storage location to your mem card.

It is not like the 3650 changeover, it will not move your phone memory messages - it will only store new messages/beamed files to your memory card from onwards, after you run it.

It prevents the Memory Full problem from happening. To change to mem.card:

+ Install the attached SIS file.
+ Run the new icon that appears on your menu. A blank screen will appear. After a few seconds, hold down your menu key to get the task man, and exit the prog. Your message location will have changed to E:, and your "Messaging" icon will be of a memory card.

MCE3650. is attached.

In regard to that.. well... MCE3650. won't solve it, but you should be able to take it to a UK Nokia Service Centre, provided that you have a receipt and the warranty card... I think. If you do get it fixed, use MCE3650. as preventative medicine to save you the trouble in future 😊

Thank you so much for the file. Really does the trick.

However, one word of caution that once you run it, your old messages are gone.

And transfering files from c:\system\mail to e:\system\mail wont help you get them back as a file named "index" is always being used by the system, so it can't be replaced.

Anybody with a solution to this?

Hmm... maybe the FORWARD program can do the trick. It transfer's sms's on the fly, but is probably unsuitable for large received files.

Don't quote me on it though, I'm not sure at all.

@Vicky - huh? :con?

@Unclesam, you can restore to phone memory by going into Messaging, press for the Options menu, choose settings, then choose Other, and u can change to Phone memory! 😊

Now that would be a good idea... 🙄

Hint for the slow: I'm talking about making a MAC PC Suite.

Unfortunately, N-GAGE doesnt have this option. In other menu there are 2 options "save sent msgs" and "No. of saved msgs" thats all for that reason N-Gage owners have to use prgram whic is MCE3650ForN-Gage torageTheSMSinMMC). for storage sms in mmc right? jas0nuk ?

The MCE3650ForN-Gage(StorageTheSMSinMMC).sis application is a rename of MsvDriveE.sis.

If you extract the content of both files (with UnMakeSIS for example) you can see that inside both you find MsvDriveE.app and MsvDriveE.rsc (this is why you can't find this app in the net, cause it's MsvDriveE)

jas0nuk 😊

U gotta love the ebay. i bought my QD for very cheap off ebay.

Yep. I did get mine in the end. lol. Very quick as well! 😊

Btw, that program - yes, it does make the messages store in the MMC.

I have the same problem of a dead Nokia, this is through switching cards from my 6600 and transfering files over , did'nt realise that it would knack the phone, had it to a phone shop who have flashed the memory and done a software install, all to no avail, guess I'll have to take it to a Nokia centre to see how much it will cost.
bought Ngage off Ebay so can't return it.

if it is fixed I will post a msg to say how much it cost.

shadowarrior wrote:so...any other way to revert the patch back......from MMC to Phone memory..for a Ngage /Ngage QD ??

hi

that's what i'm interested in. does anybody know what exactly this MsvDriveE does. is there anyway to revert it. tried uninstalling but that wouldn't help.

jas0nuk wrote:I'm talking about making a MAC PC Suite.

When, where, is it available? what phones will it support? 6600? any URL for more info and download?

Dave

Hi, I need help too.

Having installed and run MCE3650forNGAGE I then found (like H4rsh earlier in the thread) that old messages are no longer available. Not sure If I am right but did H4rsh manage to move them to his card using the utility Forward.sis or are the old messages actually gone forever?

If they are recoverable does anyone (H4rsh or jas0nuk perhaps?) know how to do this? I have installed Forward but when I run it, it just gives a screen saying (no data) and pressing Options just gives "Refresh view" to select. Have I not installed Forward correctly perhaps? Should there be some options about what and where to transfer things from/to?

I think jas0nuk said something about forward transferring messages on the fly so perhaps there are no options as such.

Can forward really help to recover old messages?

Thanks for any help.
