i was running out of memory on my Ngage so I compressed everything I could using Stacker and then went to the App Manager to check what was taking up memory. I deleted things like old text messages, images I don't need and basically all the junk I had accumulated. I then went back to the App Manager to check what my good work had freed up. Despite having no messages this was shown as taking up 12K and the calender 10K although there was nothing in it.
Why is this? Surely if there are no messages that should be using 0K. Can someone explain this and also how to free up this memory as I am still down to about 500K on the device.
Cheers
I gather you have installed 3rd party applications? there are a few things that may help. I recommend installing Fexplorer. then goto C:\nokia\images\delete all images and directories in there except maybe the background you'd like ( I have no background) this will free up like 400k. next go back a directory and then into installs(c:\nokia\installs) delete any files in there (these are your install files and are not needed after the app is installed). I'd get rid of any old apps you still have on your phone via menu/tools/manager. maybe check your c:\system/apps directory and delete anything old apps have left behind (tony hawk for example leaves something like 100k of files even if its not inserted).
Thats about all I can think of at the moment. If you have a memory card install everything to it instead of your device memory. also think about installing the program to install messages to your memory card so you dont have to delete them all.
What I normally do every now and then is type *7370# to reset the phone then i install fexplorer and gointo c:/nokia/images and delete all them. this leaves me with 3.670k free space. Then I install everything to my memory card. I have about 13 apps installed and I still have 3.560k free. it sounds like you may need to do this. remember to backup all contacts etc first. (or write em down).
hmmm... if you have netfront or opera or doris etc. they are normally set to store cache on the c: by default maybe they are taking away your space.
Sorry if you already knew all this. Hopefully this will help you or someone else lurcking in the forums.

Thanks, Primax i did know a fair bit of that but your note did prompt me to check one or two things I had forgotten to do recently so I have freed up a bit of space.
My main point was about things like messages which might show, say, 20K before having a clean up. After a clean up and deleting all the rubbish the App Manager still shows that the messages take up say 12K even though I have got rid of everything. Same with images and the like. I don't understand the way it works at all.
I think I may have answered my own question so if anyone is interested here is what I did. Having done those things I had forgotten to do I then went and looked at my logs and lists of recent calls etc. Cleared the lot and the memory usage for messages suddenly plummeted to about half the value. No doubt there is other junk in there if I poke around enough. Seems messages is a bit of a misnomer or have I got it wrong?
