BANWIDTH PROBLEM!!!!! :evil:

Well, rather than just go, no forget the bandwith lets just use the topics that eat up the bandwith, how about suggesting a solution to us moderators as to how we can approach the solution. Text doesn't pose a problem, pictures do.

Well I've got plenty of spare disk space/bandwidth on my own server which could take some of the load. Also if you can try install mod_gzip on the apache server which will cut the bandwidth usage a bit. I've found that on text I can get around 80% more effective bandwidth. JPG's obviously don't compress that well

okay here's a couple of suggestions.

1. ask images to be hosted on some other site, there are lots of free sites and members who want to post images can get a free account and put all their images there and have them referenced to in the posts. images that the moderators feel are more important can then be copied to the forum's own space. i would think this would be screenshots and maybe selected pictures of products, as opposed to pictures taken using the phone's cameras.

2. limit the size (either dimensions or file size) of the pictures. small pictures smaller downloads. would speed things up for people as well. i don't always want to see all the pictures posted in all the threads i read. sometimes I just want to see the outside or the inside etc.... or a perticular screenshot... so smaller images would be good. then link to the bigger pictures somewhere else.

just my 2� don't know how feasible they are.

maybe you can create a background page ?? something like esato does ?

This is all fairly easy. You just have to hack the code to phpBB2 a bit to divert the uploads to a remote site.

When u locked the thread i think you should give the reason why

cos i've seen the topic that is locked. is locked without any reason from the moderator. as for the Screenshot topic that locked yes i know it's about the bandtwith problem but i think the moderator should give a reason more detailed not just locked the topic.

I have a lot of spare time at the moment (being a student) so if the owner of the forum wants to give me a snapshot of the phpBB files and configs they are using (obivouly you can hash out SQL+admin passwords etc) I will write code into the posting and viewing pages that will allow uploading and viewing of attachments to a remote site (which can be my own if you want i have about 250 meg of space and 5gb bandwidth per month, or anyone with a better offer) without altering the user interface in any way what-so-ever.

If you are interested let me know. I will fully test it before letting it loose on the live allabouter6.com forums.

I've also been comtemplating writing a script to allow simple viewing of the forums over WAP (no attachments, images, BBcode etc.).

I haven't locked any topics except unsutible ones, which I normally delete.

I think the Picture/Movie posting has got a little out of hand, and we really need as much space as possible.

Rafe, how much longer do you think we have, considering current useage and members?

opening this forum for those with 7650 to be able to get interact with others 7650 users , and now the moderattors locking our posts without any (which i think valid reason)
As for the image posting, i think its more populkar than othres topic , you can see from the total reply.
Its prove that people like to browse stuff like that in the forum
but now, too bad its LOCKED!!! :evil:

Turn the situation around. People have to pay for bandwidth. Simple. This forum is allowed x per month. Above that it cost. How much should they pay over this? Is it fair that one person should pay large amounts of money becuase other people aren't reasonable? There are other options rather than uploading pictures to the forum. I've offered many times to setup a bit of space on my server people can use, for free. Or use your own web space a put in a link.

I don't see any problems.
If you want to share your pics you can always upload your images on a free host.
Normally every ISP provides at least 5mb of webstorage.
Linking to a image so everybody can see them you do like this:

Remember that most forums don't allow attachments, this is a great forum because it is/was allowed.

If a user posts a image which explains a problem with his camera, no problem. If everyone wants to share their video's/photo's ... upload them somewhere else and link to this site.

Bandwidth is the most expensive thing in the cyber world. You have no idea what a site like this costs.

The Bandwidth problem is because of the massive increase in traffic generated from the 7650 forum, any pic/image/video triples the used bandwidth again. In time the 7650 forum will cool down when the number of new users drop.
Until that time talk as much as you want, share your images through other hosts and if you really want to post them here send Rafe some money per image 😉)))

Just to give people an idea it cost me 100 GBP to buy a 120 GB harddisk. To by 40GB of transfer a month costs me 55GBP every single month and thats because I've got a really really good deal

I have only locked "More pics taken with 7650" becuase it was a repeat topic, I left a note on it.

I have also posted on the "pic's taken with 7650" and asked that they not post 3-4 images of the same thing becuase of the bandwith problem.

Like Dalzer says why should Rafe take the brunt of the cost's when he already puts so much time and effort into the site. He doesn't even own a 7650 so why should he pay for us to talk about it on his site?

There's no point blaming the moderators for locking threads, if it carrys on the way it is the forum won't be around much longer.

Until a desision is made on what's going to happen about this we need all the bandwith possible.
