ive read in these forums about how the 7610 doesnt have a bluetooth serial port but it says in the manual and on the nokia website that it does support it.
this is strange because when i try and connect the phone to the computer using bluetooth it says only dial up networking and the file transfer services are available. :con?
i can connect with the phone through Nokia PC Suite (ver 6.4.8) but not with any other phone manager programs.
im using Widcomm bluetooth software (ver 1.4.6 build 6).
just want to know if anyone has this problem or knows any more information
cheers 😊
Bluetooth serial port is software created not offered as one of the default options through the bluetooth stack. This is the same as on Palm OS. Other programs like oxygen phone manager can also create a serial connection over bluetooth.
i have connected with a bluetooth serial port on my girlfriends 7650 without any problems and i thought that it would be the same on my 7610.
if nokia says it is available how do i access it? ive tried connecting using oxygen phone manager but that doesnt recognise it when i try using bluetooth.
:con?
I am not sure what you are asking. The bluethooth serial port protocol is supported but not through the standard bluetooth stack. Nokia changed it so that it has to be integrated into a PC-type companion application. The stuff is all there in the Nokia SDK which I am just starting to look at. Why they did this I do not know.
If you are asking if you can somehow use Oxygen's desktop app to force a serial connection to another app this will not work AFAIK. Oxygen as well as the PC suite is created to open the protocol to communicate with a specific app residing on the phone. People are trying to force a bluetooth serial port connection to get IP routing using ICS (to get internet on their phone via their computer). So far they have had no luck. I started looking at the SDK to see if maybe I could create something like this with my meager skills. I don't have alot of time so we'll see how it goes.
thanks for clearing that up. i was hoping to get a file manager program on the computer that can let me do more than the stupid pc suite and the usb cable.
good luck with the sdk! :icon14:
cheers!
Any joy with the SDK?
I've just got a 6630 and found out it too doesn't have a standard serial port profile implementation.
All I want to do is sync using standard software and use Control Freak for Winamp, which needs a serial connection.
Why have Nokia done this?

so that the consumers dont use their broadband connection for browsing and use GPRS, i learnt that the operators forced them to do so...
Sorry, I went on vacation. I will start to look into this again in the comming weeks. My feeling is theres a work around somewhere already. If I find it I will post. Otherwise, I will find some free time and take a look at this.
Zainman, incidentally, is right from what I have read. All our lousy providers requested Nokia to do this. Damn, corporations are taking over everything and interfering with our use of products we own 😞. Sadly, nobody is stopping them anymore. Where are the consumer advocates?
