P900 and that SE Update Service

17 replies · 8,045 views · Started 20 October 2004

I have just returned to an Orange P900 after about 8 months after getting one on EBay. As the firmware on the phone was the original, I went to the update service which I set in motion. When it got to the bit of switching the phone off and putting it on the cradle, I got the message "either the phone is not switched off or the battery is not charged" but the phone was off and it was connected to the mains. This went on for the best part of two hours before I got through that bit and then it came up with "device is not connected".
Eventually after three hours, it updated and I now have R5B02 as the organiser.
The question is - is this normal? It certainly is an improvement to what it did when I last had a P900 because the Orange branded one would not update at all, it had to go to a Service Centre.

dont talk to me about the bl**dy update service, it sucks! 😡

i have my docking station setup at work and the update just fails with a "unknown error" message.

btw, anything of interest fixed in the update? has the problem with sms sendTo names being missing been fixed? or the voice mail messages not being deletable?

It certainly was a flaming nightmare! To try and solve the battery problem, I connected it to the mains, disconnected it etc etc and it made no difference. In the end, I think because it had gone through so far and then failed, I used the Recovery Mode and it finally flashed but took nearly three hours! What a pain!
I have not had it flashed for long enough to find out what is different yet. Also it is eight months since I had my original P900 so I really can't remeber what was good and what was bad about the various versions.
I will try and check out those two things when I use the features, unless someone comes in and tells you beforehand.

nice one, thanks Doug.

'update' service aside, the 900 is the best phone i have owned. it certainly kicks the arse of series 60 ones. the main bug that i have found is the date/time in alarm reminders is shown as the current date/time and not that of the calendar event! not much use really. but it is a bug with UIQ and they wont fix it 😞

....but i still think it is a great phone. could only be improved by shedding a few pounds! 😉

oh, and Doug, if you use the organiser a lot, get Aqua Calendar. its the best. FC mode and all 😊

Thanks Dan, I agree with you about the P900. The list of phones I have gone through in the eight months is longer than my arm, I just have not felt comfortable with any but the P900. As an example, I had my last phone, an Orange SPV C500 for eight days. Yes it is the smallest smartphone around but sometimes, size isn't everything! I nearly dropped it twice in that time, so it had to go. And back to the P900......
I will look at that organiser. As a trainer, appointments are very important to me so anything that helps can't be bad. As long as it is not too expensive, I have so many programs for different series that won't work on others, just a waste of money.

OK, You need Java on the PC! The program will not notify you to install Java, so just download it and install then do an update. If you are running the old version of PC Suit then the update will fail before it even reaches the update download.

just another experience which might help people.
I too struggled to update firmware on my orange p900,
tried all the stuff mentioned through out this forum with no joy.
Then as a last resort ,after backup etc. , I did a master reset on the phone and tried again and it worked!!
Dont know if all the apps. that were wiped as part of reset were stopping update or what? :con?
I had not changed any thing else and it was only sortly after last failed attempt,

Take 5 pictures, and then go view their thumbnails -- check all 5 of those pictures -- now, can you email them or send them via Bluetooth all at once? If yes, how?

I tried e-mailing Sony Ericsson about the problems I have been having with the update service (Current firmware 162006/16):-

My query:

Firmware update fails with error connecting message after pressing
the Update button. Removing battery seems to make no difference. Windows
XP SP2 - have tried with Firewall and Anti-virus turned off. Broadband
connection. Earlier stages including software turning phone on/off work.

Here's their response:

With regards to your enquiry, Unfortunately we are experiencing problems
with the update service, we suggest you try updating the phone at a later
date.

Should you require any further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact
us again for further help and support.

Thought you guys might be interested.

I own a SE P910i on Orange and my fw update worked a treat....but the sms advisory on missed calls STILL won't delete. According to Orange, SE were supposed to have fixed that :frown:

I updated my phone today and lost english language.
My phone is from Hongkong, second hand from ebay, and after flash it only has Traditional Chinese Character set. There is no language pack for the CXC162022 series at all, mine is now showing CXC162022 R3D011

I have tried downloading every single language pack to install the english on to my phone.

As I speak no chinese (let alone read) at all, its really hard to use the phone.

SE said take it back to service centre in HongKong, and bring original receipt, really funny.

Why aren't they updating the language packs when updating firmware, obviously people are losing functionality.

Any ideas on what can be done, I'm in Australia.

Thanks

just a bit of extra info, I haven't been able to install any lang. through the language update, but installing manually was possible with the R5B language files
the results weren't great, I now have mixed languages all over the place (but slightly better than chinese)

all fixed, by doing the service reset.
