when i turn my (original) n-gage on, there's a message : "application closed:main. contact the retailer". i have to boot it again few times before the standby menu shows. what went wrong?

Hard to say. A full phone reformat (*#7370#) will probably clear the situation -- and all your data; installed apps, contacts, messages, settings, etc. 😉
Yep you can try that. I had that error but never got to the main menu so I ended up having to get it switch for a brand new QD...
