Hi,
I know this is going to be a Very Silly Question for most people on this forum, but i'm kinda stuck. Its come the time for me upgrade my phone an I am trying to decide whether to get a s700 with a Ipaq, or go for a P910.
This may seem pretty trivial to most, but I hoping you guys can give me some insight on the pros/cons of my potential investment. I'm not going to use it for business, but I would like to be able to synchronise contacts with Outlook. I would also like to use Java apps on it, so any thoughts will be greatfully received.
You know, this is not a silly question. I have been thinking about a S700 + Ipaq combination as well.
Advantages for P910i only:
- Cheaper
- Only have to carry one device with you, only have to charge one device
- Qwerty keyboard
- Symbian OS 😃
Advantages for S700 + Ipaq:
- 1,3MP camera
- Wifi + VGA screen (if you buy the right Ipaq  )
- Syncing (PPC does a better job at that!)
All devices can handle Java.
If you're thinking of upgrading, by what reasoning is this your "short list" of options? If you have some logic behind ending up with these choices, shouldn't that very same logic also help you with the final decision?
In any case, I'm of the opinion that carrying one device is always better than carrying several, if you need them both "all the time".
If you need two, the other one is always "missing", "lost" or "left in my bag", or "in the car", or "at home", "with an empty battery", ...
If you have two, you'll be sure to carry the one with a phone anyway, so the other one "missing", etc., is always the non-phone device.
If you do a lot of writing, consider a device with a proper QWERTY ( or AZERTY, if you prefer 😉 ) keyboard instead.
Who would prefer AZERTY? Karym6 is from the UK, I'm from Holland, both countries use QWERTY, don't they?
Anyway, I agree. I once had a Ericsson T68 and a Toshiba PPC, and always left my PPC at home (ok, it didn't have Bluetooth, so it wasn't that convenient...).
But the extra features of an Ipaq and a S700 are appealing....
But then again, I think I'd rather go for an "all-in-one" Qtek 9090 or a Nokia 9500 (since my new phone/pda should have wifi.....)

Anyone from France would, I imagine.
Sorry for muddying the waters, but would an imate JAM not be better than an iPaq and K700? It basically does everything both of the other two do, but in one relatively small device (and it's cheaper than a P910i).
Anyway, the P910i is, in my opinion, the best converged device out there at the moment. However, there are three main reasons why it might not be the best for someone. These would be;
1/ If you rely heavily on synching. The PXXX series synch software is dire. You will lose all your Outlook catagories, you won' get any annualy recurring events (birthdays, anniversaries, public holidays) and, in all likelihood, you will lose some events from your calendar whilst getting duplicates of others.
Many people own a P910i and don't synch very often and it doesn't bother them. for others, it's a major pain in the you know what.
2/ No wi-fi.
3/ Expensive memory cards. It uses sony memory stick duo (or duo pro) which is several times more expensive than the likes of SD. If you're not going to be using it for multimedia (i.e. MP3's, vids, games etc) this isn't a problem 'cause one 128MB card at 35 will suffice. If you are looking at getting a 1GB card or two, MS Duo's will cost you a fortune.
If not having wi-fi doesn't matter, you aren't going to synch that often, and expensive memory doesn't bother you, the P910i is simply the best phone\PDA out there. If these do matter to you, then you are either going to have to go with two devices (as you suggest), or something like the i-mate Jam or the i-mate PDA2K.
Hi,
Thanks for the suggestions guys!!!
Synchronisation is quite a big thing for me, mainly for contacts as I like to make sure I have the same contacts in everything that I use, calendar and to do notes arent that important to me. Also 802.11x would be very beneficial as I dont always want to access internet based stuff over GPRS (this would also allow me to synch over the air when im in a hotspot).
Im starting to think possible the s700/Ipaq route may be the best, especially at the weekends where you dont need to carry around a PDA.
Lol, would never consider 9500.
Cheers

Ok, sorry, I thought you were mentioning one of us guys (but then again, there is QWERTZ for Germany.... and the list goes on)
Anyway, Karym6, have you also considered one of those i-mate phones Bassey mentioned? They can basically do all what you want/need in one device...
Hi,
No I havent seen one of those, however I have seen today the new HP Ipaq with windows ppc 2003 mobile edition, that seemed pretty attractive...
