Flipping the Phone Fantastic - Nokia 6260 Review

Hi!

Can you tell me what Memory card you used? I doubt I can afford a 512Mb, but a 256 should be enough for me..... and yes, I'm back from the sh*te Microsoft 'smart' phones!

The 6260 is a pretty cool phone and I've gone from the MPx200 to it and am very pleased!

Also, have you found a Bluetooth headset that works? I've tried two now and the 6260 keeps telling me that the Bluetooth device isn'#t compatible for Handsfree?

Thanks

I've got one of these and like very much, but am frustrated whenever I ntry to install the mobipocket reader onto it. No luck whatsoever. Is this the ebook reader you used David? If so, any hints on getting it to install?

Many thanks in advance

What I did was install the Mobipocket stuff on the PC, then navigate to the Mobipocket folder in 'Program Files' on the PC and found the Series60 file (.sis) which I copied to my 6260's MMC (via a reader - I didn't have Bluetooth working at the time) and then I used the File Manager to run the .SIS file on the phone.

It works fine for me.

I own a Nokia 7650 (which I still think has the best ergonomics of any Series 60 phone) and have tried every series 60 phone on the market. I was very hopeful about the new flip phone. But - to put it bluntly - the five way navigation and the keyboard SUCK! Very very bad tactile feedback, almost no audible click, especially the navigation (IMO the most used element on a series 60 phone) is very hard to use. In theory this is a great phone with a great feature set. But as with the Sendo X, which I waited for, for more than a year, only to end up disappointed, I primarily use a phone as a phone. So I will have to wait for the 3020, Panasonics X700 or Samsungs phone in Q1 2005. 😞(

My only concern is regarding how long the hinge will last. I don't understand your lack of tactile feedback issue though, especially in regard to audible click. When I'm in church and want to look something up in Mobipocket (honest Pastor, I'm not playing games!), I'm worried that the click on keypress is too loud!

It's not the best keypad on a Series60 unit, but it's not the worst I've used either.

The memory card is a generic 512mb from Expansys, cost about 50. I stuffed it full of loads of things and it's still only half full, so 256 would have been enough.
The Bluetooth headset I use is a Jabbra BT200, my old BT100 gave the same error as yours.

Yep I use the Mobipocket reader as well. I did the same as Tankerx, just copied the .sis file across to the memory card.

Well, maybe mine is a very european secular opinion, since the percentage of people regularly attending church certainly doesnt exceed 10-20% with a further downward trend. So there just arent many places where anybody else could conceivably hear the clicks of my phone. Ring tones on the other hand are a totally different story 😉

I stick with my comments: This phone has a very bad tactile feedbacl, especially with the five-way-navigation ley (and here especially sideways you almost feel nothing when pressing it and it is very imprecise and you can easily press up or down instead. Almost every Samsung flip phone and many Panasonics have better keyboard than any series 60 phone on the market.

Just look at the SX1. Fancy, but hardly usable. 7610: Funky, but unconventional. Sendo X: pretty hard to press. Phone manufactureres have to go back to the drawing board and remember that they firsat of all have to produce a phone which is highly usable. Just my 2 cents.

i think the 7610 is obviously better with a better camera, stylish looks and more video time and a 64-MB rs-mmc

Hmm, I think the 6260 looks much more stylish, and the size of mmc card is irrelevant until they start shipping 128+ cards with the phones as neither 32 nor 64 is big enough. As for the camera, neither are good enough for anything but snaps, and I have yet to see a 1mp phone camera that is signifigantly better than a VGA one. Also the 7610 is more expensive.
I am getting a 6670 tomorrow, so I will be able to do a back to back comparison and I will post the results.

David

Do you mean that? I find 1mp cameras are much better than VGA cameras. For example the S700 and 6630 finally offer quality I would call "acceptable", while VGA cams are nowhere near that.

So I have to disagree there...

As far as tactile feedback, i actually own a 6260 and i'm holding it right now. The keypad is very audible, its only the joypad that is more softer in sound. Though, it confuses me that in the past, many reviewers have given phones negetive points for any sound coming from the keys other than the tones.

Video recording time is unlimited if using the MMC, i recorded an 18 minute video of 6.65mb. Very nice too, i must say.

I was apprehensive at first with this phone, but now, i've practically fallen for it.

Read my own little review in the 6260 forum, and a very cool solution to the lack of stereo MP3 support.

I am sorry to say that the nokia 6260 is the worst series 60-phone ever made:

- it is not usable with one hand
- it is only possible to make photos with the flip opened - this is ok for camcorders, but makes no sense with a tiny phone at all
- the built quality is very very bad

The new 6670 is very nice. Though nokia now makes very ugly and cheap looking "plastic" designs. Stylish phones are Sony Ericsson (S700, K700) and now even Motorola (V3 "razr"😉. Why not make series 60-phones stylish? And stop messing with keyboard layouts, please!

At first, I thought the camera was just as unusable, but it not actually that bad. If you don't want to use it like a camcorder, you can always use it in 'Tablet Mode', looking down on the screen which isn't as awkward as it sounds.

The phone looks like Panasonic's model for Japanese market. The design idea is good but only idea. The phone with clumpy looks and hard to use(just my impressions after using Japanese models of the kind). I wonder when European makers will learn how to make convenient phones...
