Hi, I'm trying to set the right hand side 'soft key' and the up/down/left/right parts of the main navigation button to take me directly to 'compose a text' 'calendar' and other applications on my 7610 but can't seem to work out how? Can anybody help
Shortcuts on my 7610 Keypad
The center of the directional/select key is already a shortcut to Contacts.
In the "Settings" app, at the "Standby mode" settings you can change the left and right softkeys.
That's the extent of shortcuts like that which can be changed without any extra software. I recall there is some app or two to do more, but their name(s) escape me for the moment.
(It isn't any consolation in your case, but the new[er] 6630 phone allows you to configure all the directional/selection key directions and center in addition to the softkeys to any app.)
hmm... bring your phone to the nearest care centre... upgrade it to the latest firmware... they fixed the shorcut problem in 7610... this is good...

I hate to keep doing this, but...

halfway down the page.

hmm. only when the question is directly answered 😉
cut/paste loses formatting (which might be important)
Great! Xand, I've been waiting for this upgrade for too long.
I know the carphone warehouse near me does the firmware upgrades to Nokias, BUT I am on Orange ... will I be able to use the latest upgrade.
I am guessing I will lose me Orange world browser thingy by doing this and have no browser at all.
Hmmm.
Cheers,
Nyx.
Must confess, very nice to be able to have four extra shortcuts though!
I have the latest firmware available at the moment in India, 4.0437.4 dt 15-9-04 and yes, I can set shortcuts for all the 5-nav keys. Right is calendar, left is new message, up is profiles, down is call log and centre is contacts. Very very nice, I must say. Who care for the Go To now!
Why should you lose anything? Before the firmware update do a complete backup of the phone to your PC using PC suite (and as an extra precuation also to the MMC card) and after it (the update will erase all data) simply do a restore. Correct me anybody if I am wrong.
if i get a firmware upgrade will i lose all the data like SMS on the phone memory or the memory card? i dont want to lose anything please! is a full battery needed for this upgrading?
A firmware upgrade will erase absolutely everything in the phone memory; it will not touch anything on the SIM or memory card.
Sandeep,
I can back up all normal stuff, no probs, BUT ...
Orange do their own custom version of the firmware you see. They take off the licensed copy of Opera (idiots) and build into the firmware an orange world browser. Its not bad mind, not complaining at it, but if I now do a bog standard (non-orange) firmware upgrade I will lose me browser and I will not be able to just stick a copy of opera on without paying for it.
Least I think this is the case.
Would like to hear from another Orange user in the UK to see if they have taken a non-orange standard firmware upgrade.
Hmmmmm
Cheers,
Nyx.
Zainman Just Make Back up in P.C or in MMC and then Upgrade Your phone firmware and then after you restore all the backup either by MMC Option or by P.C.
and will not lost anything.
I thought the opera browser was on the mmc card and tied in to the EMIE No./model no. I did not give them the memory card when they did the upgrade. Everything works and I have all the software as far as I can see. Of course have not had much time to fool around really. I am stuck to wap/basic gprs, since in India Hutch/Orange charges quite a bomb for full access. So I am using the Nokia wap browser, not really started Opera.
Is there anyway to update this firmware without handing your phone to a company or no??
No way without illegal ROM file copies and expensive equipment. Go to (or send the phone to) an authorized Nokia service center for that.
In Mumbai Nokia just took a couple of hours on the spot to do it for me.
