Userguide: Suggestions needed (please)

23 replies · 4,128 views · Started 08 December 2001

Find below the very first contents list for the guide. What I want from you is suggestions as to what should be here. If you can recommend a tip for an inbuilt (or third party piece) of software then that is even better.

I've already added more to it. But I want other people's thoughts..

I also need someone to either wrtite the ringtone section or tell me a bit about using different ringtones (I can't - dont own a 9210).

Rafe

BTW I decided that if there are any charges on this they will be completelt voluntary.

Oh Master! User posted image

I think this is a very technical English text for me, hehehe... If I can translate it, could you make it in Spanish for me?

BTW, will it be a SIS file to can install it on our 9210?

Regards

I can't speak any other languages well enough to translate it myself, but if anyone else wishes to do so I dont mind then doing the formating etc.

I'm hoping once the first final version is produced to have
a) copy of the website
b) copy to download to PC
c) SIS file that will install .hlp file or .html files.

Rafe

It's all about the little tips like Using the move to arrange the links in other places instead of having everything in extras, and other fine tuning business, innit. User posted image

I had a few things to mention but only remembered that when it came to it...

Section 7 should have how to get rid of temporary files and how to rest al INI files. (If you haven't already thought of that).

I'll add more as I think of them.

So far the contents look good.

Oh, and how about a section for standard PC apps?

Like PC Suite, Multimedia Converter, Admin Suite for PC Suite, etc...

Oh and a Multimedia section which I can try help with if you want, as I know 1 or 2 things about it User posted image

Regards

Thanks for the suggestion - taken on board.

N9210 - if you could so some stuff for the multimedia setion that woudl be great. Mainly with creation of files I guess and conversion using multimedia converter. If you want more info e-mail me.

Loony - you listening in on this - a definitive guide (text is fine) to creating your skins would be great User posted image

Any other contribution welcomed.

BTW all intial stuff upto 3 done (and most of 4), quite a bit added to - its up to 11 pages already..

Agent Loony - glad to see you've got the right attitude!

Basically I just want a Loony method for the creation with all you've learnt creating them. (i.e. 4.6.2)

and anytime is fine... (no rush .. I've got a lot of writing left to do).<font size=-1>[ This Message was edited by Rafe on 2001-12-09 2352 ]</font>

Can I just say that there is no better person than Loonyworld for that job as he kindly led me through the process of getting my skins working when I got stuck. Not that it was hard looking back on it, but it's nice to have someone to refer to just in case.

Big respect to Loonyworld, look forward to what you write in the thingy User posted image

Hi All and especially Rafe. Just to say that I'm really looking forward to this manual, in fact so impatient am I that I'd like to suggest you create a section on this site and post the bits you've written as you progress. Perhaps other members could comment constructively so that Rafe could incorporate worthy suggestions.

Fan bloody tastic idea.If I may add my tuppence worth. In 2.1.3. Firmware, it may seem a bit negative but a small "known problems" section with a troubleshooter would be a hit I think. As we get to ver.3.62+ the problems may cease but for now it would be reassuring to know we all suffer the same! Then links could take you to relevent sections.
All forum elders, keep it up, and thanks.

Rafe, give me a pointer on what you need in the ringtone section and I'll put all the details down for ya. I'm on my second 9210. I got a bit crushed at work and the Nokia came off second best, but the new one works so much faster it's unreal. The phone side doesn't pause between button presses at all, like the 8210 in the old days. It's the same v.54 firmware, but twice as fast. Odd eh?
p.s. Always have your 9210 insured, the guy in the shop informed me that a sim-free 9210 (without a contract tying me to a phone company) would have set me back 945.00 GBP<font size=-1>[ This Message was edited by hazy1uk on 2001-12-13 1956 ]</font>

Here as requested is what has been written so far. Please remember this has not been spell or grammar checked nor proof read. It is an early draft as you can get!

Didn't work - will upload as file soon

Now avialable at

Rafe - I've noticed 2 small problems with the guide, the firmware versions are slightly out, should be 3.54 and 3.62. Also you state that the 9210 can't open .RNG files, it can. If you open one in File Mangler it will open and play the ringtone.

HTH

Looks excellent so far.

In 4.1, you say ringtones should be stored in c\system\tones. Should that be d\system\tones, or is c\system\tones a hidden folder I don't know how to access? Should wav files be stored here as well, that's not clear?

4.1.4 - I am one of those who cannot get individual ringtones to work. My main contact dbf is on c, although I have others on d. I'm sure I've set it up as per your user manual. Any other ideas?

4.2 ....right side... I assume this should be ....right size....

Awaiting the rest with interest!

I think it would also be useful to know a little more about system files. Where they can be found, what applications they refer to, What their extensions mean, etc.
.. and what the user can do with them in case of problem.

Also, if there is a way to know what is in the "packaged" sis files that Nokia proposes, it would also be useful, because when one decides to reinstall either C or D sis files, we don't know what we actually are going to install, and hence we don't know what to deinstall before doing it..

Thanks for the suggestions I have done the corrections already. I'll look into adding the suggestions too, akthough I still working to get a finsihed version ready 0

I am impressed by the current version and am looking forward to the full thing, esp section 7. I would love to see a table of "secret" key combinations, like Ctrl-Shift-F, -I during reboot!

Thanks a lot for your efforts!

Give me work 😛

Can help in:
html layout (search engine etc...)[/list:u]
skin guide[/list:u]
converting nim's and good settings[/list:u]
I will be searching how to export this guide to the 9210 itself 😊 Maybe in OPL that I want to learn anyhow, the hlp files or the easy way html offcourse 😉 [/list:u]

Let me now, I'll try to give my self work 😉 but don't want to do stuff someone else allready is doing 😊

F**k AAARGHHH I'm starting to hate the fucking login button :ssss

They should give you the option to login when you're allready replying

anyhow last post was mine 😉

ahem.. I was hoping no one was going to bring the topic back to the top of the forum... Thanks Dazler 😉

Well I have been doing some work on it.

You can see it here: http://www.allabouter6.com/communicator/guide/

The customisation section is finsihed. So now you can all create your own skins, ringtones, wallpaper, icons etc. I'm working on the next bit soon, but if anyone wants to submit tips to go in to it anywhere, but particuarly section 5-7 I be very ahppy for them to do so.

Rafe

kudos Rafe!! keep up the good work, looking forward to your final release of the guide.

got to browse thoroughly the manual, i don't know if you included the "++sp" tip to show the z: drive...

😊

Good work, Rafe. Have you considered a section on how to configure the 92x0 to access email accounts, WAP and web? When I bought my 9210, admittedly one of the first in the area, it was murder - I couldn't find anybody to talk to who knew what all the settings were!

I know that different service providers (Cellnet/O2, Orange, Vodafone, etc. in the UK) will require different settings, but then you could invite contributions from users to supply the settings for their service provider.
