Simple poll, some people have asked for OPL, wondering what the people who infrequently leave the 7650 forum would say.
Brief background: OPL is a BASICesque programming language dating back to the Psion personal organisers of the late 80s. In it's current incarnation it is only in beta for the 9210, no offers to port this language have yet been given for 7650 owners. The question is this, given the chance would you be interested in using it to develop apps for your 7650?
No, would stick to C++/Java sorry to say! But thats just me! It would not hurt however, to have other options availabe!
My main concern would be the size of the runtime environment on the 7650's limited RAM capacity. It would probably open up a whole new sphere of development potential for the 3650 though.
Yes on the 3650 its a different story! Maybe the Poll should say Series 60 instead of 7650!
i'm with MaleBuffy & TANKERx
i think you can do anything with the 3650
Last couple of weeks I have been dabling with the C++ SDK. It seems to be quite powerful. BUT UNFORTUNATELY, Symbian and Nokia screwed us w.r.t the documentation. The documentation stinks from ground up. Nothing is documented properly and you are just lost.
I wouldnt want Symbian to screw us yet again with an undocumented OPL. What I would simply prefer is updated documentation. But definitely C++ and Java are more powerful options.
I am thinking of coding some kind of wizards for the symbian SDK (firstly atleast a resource file editor)... But firstly I need to learn more.
Fortunately a complete OPL would be included in a firmware upgrade (most likely, as it would be an upgrade to the Symbian OS). As such that would make the runtime execute-in-place code so should not waste space. Also OPL documentation would come from Symbian and fortunately is well documented.
Yes.
Anyway, to me, it is not a professional programming language tool.
It is looked much like an batch scripting tool for Symbian OS.
Just like the Qbasic for DOS/Windows.
OPL is perfectly suited to the Series 60 pda's n my opinion. Many apps ou need are short / small reference apps, with minimal interfaces. Remember OPL is a full BASIC language, not just scripting, and it was initially designed (in the late 80s) for the Organsier 2 and original S3 which had similar sreen sizes and performance to the S60's.
I'm all for it. Even if it means I can start porting Vexed and maybe work on this 'Elite' clone I have buzzing round my head that's just gonna be awkward on the 9210 screen size.
As an OPL developer on the Psion machines I would love the chance to write software on the 7650 with OPL. It is a robust, memory-efficient and, most importantly, rapidly-written language. If Symbian released an OPL runtime for the 7650 I am sure there would be a rapid increase in the number and quality of programs available.
So who should we pester?
OPL Rocks!!!
I definitely want it.. I remember developing apps for the Series 3 Psion, it was soo easy.. For those of you who have never used it, it's as simple as writing in Visual Basic apps for Windoze. Except I think OPL's way of managing menus was really easy. The overall development process was quite simple. Would be good to have the tools to be able to develop on the pc too.
