Internet access

Just bought an A1000 and discovered that I can't acess normal internet pages. From posts on this site I understnad that's because of 3's walled garden approach. Anyone know a way round this, i.e. by seting up an alternative GPRS internet account with someone else, even if I have to then pay for that access???

Seems fairly pointless having a 3G connection, a decent web browser but I can only look at the pages 3 deem I can look at.

Also can't access POP3 servers, although I can reach the IMAP one that 3 gave me. Is this likely to be for the same reason?

If you want data you need to get the phone unlocked, then in theory any SIM or USIM will work. People seem to have a lot of success with O2 sims and A925s.

To test the internet functionality, hook up the bluetooth/usb cable to a PC using the motorola data suite. If your PC is online the phone should be able to connect to the internet.

If your email account supports it, forward all your email to your 3mail imap account. Gmail is great for this, lets you use filters to only send some emails.

Very pointless. It's not only a decent Web browser, but the latest version of Opera including an upgraded version of the Small-Screen Rendering technology. Better than the Opera browser available for the P800/900, it's a shame people do not get a chance to use it. Maybe if enough people hassle 3 about their walled garden policy they might give in.

Their walled garden policy just simply means I will not under any circumstances use 3!

Does anyone know if the Vodaphone 3G phones are similarly locked down? If not that could probably be used as a lever to get 3 to change their minds.

Has anyone tried using another 3 phone connected to a PC to act as a proxy for their main phone?

I know that there are apps out there (eg prosit) which purport to offer the ability to use your phone as a web-server, however I havent yet tested them across the 3UK network (it works using 127.0.0.1).

If prosit works 'though the air', then it should be a relativley simple task to create a proxy-server and circumvent 3UK's walled-garden.

Re the proxy server idea, like the idea but means you need two "3" phone and therefore 2 contracts I assume which is a pain and expensive.

Am trying to find an alternate web browser for the phone to see if that lets me do a separate dial up connection to another ISP. I don't use all the inclusive minutes each month so would effectively be free, assuming I can find the "real" number for a pay as you go ISP rather than the 0845 number.

I've had Internet working on my A920 ( flashed to A925 ) in Australia for some time, I have the Bills to prove it.

I use WebViewer from Requireless as my browser as it can be set to Text only, and emailviewer from the same.

If you check your local 3 web site ( a pain I know ) see if they are offering any web access packages for Laptops as the connection set up is the same, ie creating a new enternet connection under control panel in the phone and use the server they sugest. In Australia its 3netaccess no passwords but charged at .4c per kb.

It will only work if you are able to set up another Internet connection on the phone, it will even allow proxy.
