What do you need it for? There are no viruses for S80. And even if there were, you'd have to download and install it yourself. And as long as you download your apps from reliable sources you should be safe.

Just bought it.

Will see if it is any good. It comes as a two year licence. On symantec's website, it says there are viruses for the symbian hardware, so taking no chances seeing we have WiFi now. Cost $44.95+tax

🙄

You cannot get your system infected by simply browsing the web through WLAN. Your Communicator isn't running Windows and using IE. A Windows virus CANNOT cause any harm whatsoever to your system.

This whole Symbian virus thing is just blown way out of proportions. You have to look at the FACTS here. First of all, the two maliciously coded applications for Series 60 (Cabir and Skulls), has to be downloaded from an unreliable source (i.e. warez site) and installed by the user himself. These two apps are the ONLY known "viruses" for the Symbian OS and can ONLY run on the Series 60 platform, NOT Series 80 (92xx/9500/9300). In fact, they cannot even be classified as viruses since they require the user's permission to run.

So, people, please don't fall for the hype. Go spend your hard earned money elsewhere. 😊

You are most probably right. Our company pays for all the software anyway.

Raven, I never had blackberry yet, could you tell me if there are any problems with emails with viruses? I understand the point of it being windows based virus? But why are they making this product. The anti-virus software I bought also came with a firewall from symantec too? Is that any use? Also there is another company making an anti-virus software for release in Jan 05.

Barflux,

The reason for all those anti-virus applications popping up, I believe, is a result of every tech site on the Internet blowing those two maliciously coded S60 programs way way out of proportion, and reporting it as a big "threat" to every mobile phone user. While in reality it actually takes a lot of effort from the user's side to get infected. The only "threat" lies with S60 users who keep downloading cracked apps from warez sites. And, in my opinion, those users are thieves and deserve what they get.

There is no point in having a firewall, and the only way you can get your system infected from an e-mail attachment, is if that attachment contains a maliciously coded Symbian installation file (.SIS file). And then you first have to open the attachment and go through several warning windows before it is actually installed and can take affect. And there are no such apps for the Communicators (S80). Even if there were, you wouldn't find them on Handango - or any reliable software site.

So, you see, there are no real virus threats to Symbian users, this is all just a big hype. Also remember who stand to gain from all this hype - the anti-virus companies. 😉
