Setting for using MMC for Contacts

In other settings for Messages, there is an option to use the MMC for all messages. This worked very well offering also to delete the original messages. There seems to be no difference in speed. I can thus save messages for longer and free up precious phone memory for apps, etc. I have tried to search the forum but not found any answer to these questions:

1. Is this shifting of SMS/Messages to MMC preferable?
2. When backing up the phone (incl. MMC) will these be restored?
3. If using a card reader to copy off the MMC to the PC, will all files, incl. these get copied?
4. Where is the setting for contacts to use MMC? I have a large set of contacts I wish to transfer. Under Tools>Memory>Details, Contacts is listed in the MMC so it should be possible, but I simply cannot find it.

One more question, if I purchase a new memory card, say 256MB and copy over all the apps and data on the new one from the original one, they should all still work right?

Hmmm... not very good... I tried importing my Palm contacts to the 7610. Found too much memory is used. On the Palm, about 700 categorised contacts (with multiple tel. nos., address, etc.) takes only 136 KB. On the 7610, about 450 contacts grabbed 1.8MB!!! What is going on? Is it the fact that I am using SmartvCard to import the cause of the bloated database? Will it be compressed in due course? Help please.

While there is no slowing of the search, I think using 4MB memory for the contacts will mean Opera, games, etc. apps will not run comfortably.

I also found that if I move Messages to MMC, then PC Suite gives an error on backup - could not copy c:\system\Mail. So I have moved it back....

What a bummer...

An update - maybe things are not so bad after all. I noted that though the Memory info stated 1.3MB in use, the total of the details added up to only 700KB. 95 Contacts took up 400KB. I don't know why, but I started Opera and browsed to Google and then shut it down.

I now checked the memory - surprise surprise now it reported only 700KB in use and most important, 95 contacts now took up only 63KB. Maybe Opera closes apps and frees up some memory? But how did the Contacts database get compressed by it?

I went and deleted all the 450 contacts (which took all of 10 minutes). Now to go back and import them all again... and start Opera afterwards! So hopefully 700 contacts should take up around 700KB. This should be acceptable I think.

Hmmm.... 700 contacts took up about 420K, not too bad, but worse than the Palm at only 136KB. I reduced the number of groups from 18 to 11, this seemed to speed up things somewhat. Oh and SmartvCard works quite well, I have purchased it.

No response whatever to my SmartvCal problems.

Bump for my first post questions...
