Sending/recieving emails....

Can anyone please tell me how to set this phone up with Vodafone mail as the mail server. Its driving me NUTS

Vodafone just dont want to know and tell me to contact Sendo. This is really poor given that I bought my X on the understanding that it can send/recieve emails. Vodafone have this technology available for other makes of phones and send people the settings to their handsets. They even admit themselves that this is poor service.

I think all Vodafone UK X users should unite to lobby Vodafone and Sendo to do something about this as we're left with phones that are not capable of doing what they claim. If anyone has successfully managed to do this with Voda Mail (since that is the purpose of Vodafone Mail - why should be create an email account elsewhere?), please let me know.

Mark

i don't know if you maybe have a different version of the sendo X due to vodaphone...

i have the italian X, i connect to a belgian GPRS network, and then enter my local mailbox (external belgian internet provider mailbox) and then i can check my mail to that mailbox.

Maybe you can try that?

If you want to use another ISP, your POP3 / username / password settings should be as per your normal desktop settings.

The SMTP server is send.vodafone.net

Ok Mark, tell me which bit isn't working within the following: (sorry if this sounds a bit like stuff you already know, just want to make sure everything's been gone through)

1) Go into Messaging
2) Select Settings from the Options menu
3) Select Email
4) Select Mailboxes. If you don't have one, the phoen will prompt you to create one, if you do, select options, then edit
5) Setup the mailbox with the following settings
Mailbox name: anything you want, it's just descriptive
Access point in use: Set to Vodafone GPRS - you'll need internet access
My mail address: your full internet email [email protected] for example
Outgoing mail server: the SMTP server - possibly smtp.vodafone.co.uk ???
Send message: How do you want the message sent? (I use "during next connection"😉
Send copy to self: does what it says, might as well keep it on no
Include signature: if you select yes, it will ask you to create one
User name: the account name you use to login to your mailbox - most of the time it's your full email address, or just the bit before the @ sign
Password: password for the above user name
Incoming mail server: the IMAP / POP mail server to receive messages from - possibly pop.vodafone.co.uk, imap.vodafone.co.uk, mail.vodafone.co.uk
Mailbox type: is it a POP or IMAP mailbox? <- This is VERY important to get right!
Security: Does the outgoing (SMTP) server require authentication? Leave off unless Voda specifically say otherwise
APOP secure login: Basically SSL for POP - leave off unless specifically told otherwise
6) Click back twice, make sure that Mailbox in use now says your mailbox, then click back to exit the settings page.
7) Click on the mailbox icon within messaging (which should now have the name you assigned it, and wait)
8) 3 or 4 seconds later, it will ask you if you want to connect to your mailbox - say yes. A GPRS connection should now fire up
9) Once GPRS is established, the display will say "connecting to <mailbox name>", then will say "Updating Inbox"
10) It will then show you the inbox. NOTE: You're still connected by GPRS at this time, to hang up the connection, press Options, then Disconnect.
11) If you just exit your mailbox without disconnecting, the phone will ask if it's ok to disconnect.

Where is the above failing, and what messages is the phone giving you?

Thanks for this...

Forgive me I'm a novice!

Ok all the settings in place, however I do not know whether it is a POP3 or IMAP server?

My vodafone email is [email protected] so I guess the outgoing/incoming mail server should be set to: smtp.vodafone.net or IMAP.vodafone.net?

Again mailbox type - how do I know this?

Sorry for being thick, but what is IMAP and POP3?!!

Once I have all the settings correct then I will post them up here for others as this experience has been a nightmare!

Many thanks

Mark

Thanks for that. So what is the Incoming/outgoing mail address?

And is the mailbox type IMAP or POP3?

Cheers

Sorry I'm a novice here!!

Forget that - just signed up myself ( didn't know they had this service ) and got the following from the help screen.

In the Incoming mail server (IMAP) field, type imap.vodafone.net
In the Outgoing mail server (SMTP) field, type smtp.vodafone.net

So it definately is IMAP - apologies.

Hippo

Glad that's sorted...

Just so you know, POP3 and IMAP are two different types of mailbox.

POP3 is the "standard" version, whereby emails get downloaded from a server to your client (whether that's a PC, phone, etc. it doesn't care) and then the messages get deleted from the server.

IMAP is a cleverer version, whereby the emails stay on the server at all times (unless deleted) and are accessed from any compatible device. IMAP includes a much more capable filing system, e.g. you can have sub-folders and extra inbox type folders within a mailbox.

Hope that clears some of it up...

OK

Right for those of you that didnt know... the email settings for Vodafone Mail (direct from Sendo customer care - thanks for nothing Vodafone!) are as follows:

Mailbox - What ever you want to call it (isnt significant)

Access Point in use: Vodafone GPRS (you will need to call Vodafone to get them to send you these settings which you can then save to your phone)

My mail address: As it says - your email address e.g. [email protected]

Outgoing Mail Server: Send.vodafone.net

Send message: Set as you wish - mine is during next session

Include signature: Yes or no if you dont want one

User Name: In my case the first part of the email address before the @

Password: As set up online

Incoming mail server: pop.vodafone.net

Mailbox type: POP3

Security: Off

APOP Secure Login Off

Hope this is easier for all of you like me who dont really know what all this means. Basically when you click on mailbox now you're away and it will connect via the GPRS to your mailbox hopefully revealing your lovely new messages (if you have lots of friends).

GOOD LUCK ALL

Mark

Thanks for posting that Mark.

I find it odd that Voda think they've got to send you the GPRS settings for the phone - I know on my handset (generic UK) and on the Voda branded one I tried, the settings were built into the firmware. I guess it's a case of Voda staff not knowing what's on the phone and what isn't.

I am going to post the definative Vodaphone UK settings for using Vodafone Mail using the sendo x from my experience of reading this thread. I found that although most of the settings are spot on there are some that aren't, also the differing opinions between using either pop or imap for this service is just confusing. I have spent the past two hours signing up for an account then setting it up on my sendo x.
Below are the setttings that I have used and really do work(by the way I have pinched and adapted the very good instructions from stuclark, hope you don't mind).

1) Go into Messaging
2) Select Settings from the Options menu
3) Select Email
4) Select Mailboxes. If you don't have one, the phone will prompt you to create one, if you do, select options, then edit
5) Setup the mailbox with the following settings

Mailbox name: anything you want, it's just descriptive
Access point in use: Set to Contract WEB - as you'll need internet access
My mail address: your full internet email [email protected] for example
Outgoing mail server: send.vodafone.net
Send message: How do you want the message sent? (I use "during next connection"😉
Send copy to self: does what it says, might as well keep it on no
Include signature: if you select yes, it will ask you to create one
User name: the user name you use to login to your mailbox - just the bit before the @ sign
Password: password for the above user name - the one set when you registered online
Incoming mail server: imap.vodafone.net
Mailbox type: IMAP4 <- This is VERY important to get right as you can't change it later if you get it wrong then you have to start again from the beginning
Security: Off - you don't need this
Retrieve attachment: does what it says - leave off unless you want to download the attachments
Retrieve Headers: I've just left at the default 30

Hope this helps everybody setting vodafone mail up for the first time on the sendo, hopefully you won't spend hours at it like me.

Hi

Thanks for the mail settings. Still can't get web access though so a similar list of settings that work would be much appreciated!

Rgds

Paul

ooops! for vodafone that is!

For Vodafone you have to ring them up (08080 945945 UK) and ask them to enable GPRS for your handset.

There isnt anything you can do until Vodafone enable it, i know, i just did it myself on Friday 😊

omegax wrote:There isnt anything you can do until Vodafone enable it, i know, i just did it myself on Friday 😊

OK, so I get the helpful people at Voda to throw the switch or whatever....... then what? I notice that the online GPRS configutator on the V website has every model of Sendo except the X!

Yeah Vodafone havn't configured the settings for the Sendo X yet. I know the Sendo website has some, but vodafone may ask you to edit some when they enable your phone.

It works, it works, it works!!!

Strange but true.

Slightly different settings but definitely working

Thanks for your help

Paul

I had a look at Vodafone Mail and it said that it also changes how voicemail works. Does it behave differently? Can you still get free notification of voicemails? It doesn't explain it very well on the Vodafone site so could anyone give me more information?

Vodafone have two voicemail services, voicemail and vodafone mail.
Voicemail is pretty basic answering service
Vodafone mail allows you to use your account for voicemail, email, fax and you can access it from any device which has full internet access like the Sendo X and your PC via www.vodafone.net where you can also register.
To access it via phone call 242 from your UK Vodafone
To access it via GPRS full internet access on your phone simply contact Vodafone UK to ensure that you are provisioned for "GPRS full internet access" (make sure you emphasise this otherwise the dingbats will probably just provision normal GPRS access for WAP. Then configure your phone for internet access via www.sendo.com/config
To access it via GPRS WAP simply contact vodafone to ensure that you are provisioned for "GPRS WAP access" and configure your phone for WAP via www.sendo.com/config and to access it i think you go via the Vodafone live menu, and select messages then vodafone mail and follow the prompts on your WAP session.

The cheapest form of accessing your messages via your phone will obviously be GPRS WAP, via your PC, or 242. GPRS full internet access can become expensive way of accessing them due to the amount of data downloaded which is what GPRS charges against.

Thanks euphoriauk for your help. What I want to make sure is that voicemail works in exactly the same way with Vodafone Mail as it does the normal way.

Hi,

Im new as well, just got sendo x and having probs with the email settings and Web stuff, doesnt seem to want to work despite putting in as described above (using settings from btyahoo website) does anyone know a way round this?

and does anyone know how to get the web stuff working also? ive asked vodafone and sendo to send me the settings but they just dont seem to come thru! 😊

stuclark wrote:Have you tried the online configuration thingy on Sendo's website? It worked for me...

Yeah ive tried that and the settings never came thru (have tried like 10 times now) also asked vodafone to send them me and no joy there, have tried the settings above and can now retrieve my mail but i cant reply to any or send new mails with or without an attachement (tried to send a photo)

any ideas??

Have sorted this now, sendo told me to input send.vodafone.net as the outgoing server and it works great now!

thanks for the help so far!

My Vodafone branded Sendo-X connects happily to Vodafone mail and pulls back my emails - settings are as previous thread (except mailbox type is POP-3 not IMAP). I can also access my Orange email inbox. However whatever variation of settings I use I cannot access eother of my Tiscali (or Lineone) mailboxes! Vodafone customer service eventually told me that there is some sort of connection problem between Vodafoe and Tiscali ... but I'm not sure I fully buy that explanation.
Has anyone else had similar problems??

Exactly the same problem for two months. Vodafone (after a 20 minute helkp line conversation) eventually admit that there is an ongoing issue with the connection between Vodafone and tiscali. Neith Tiscali nor Vodafone seem very interested in sorting it out.
