Toshiba to unveil Bluetooth mobile storage device

Toshiba is set to launch a Bluetooth-equipped portable storage device.

The Hopbit will offer 5GB of storage, enough for around 1000 MP3 audio tracks and 3000 digital images from a three-megapixel camera.

The Bluetooth module will allow users to seamlessly transfer data from other devices such as handheld computers.

It's expected to receive its debut at the World PC Expo, which opens in Tokyo on October 16.

A spokeswoman told PC Advisor the device will retail in Japan at around 260. There are no plans yet for a launch outside Japan.

Will this work 4 us?

if it does i'm having one.

has anyone had any luck streaming data from their hds?

i.e. has anyone written a java app for it yet?

Not sure how useful this would be. I'm imagining that this portable bluetooth hdd is about the size of a laptop hdd, 9mm, in a protective cover with a battery pack and ac adapter. The phone would connect via bluetooth, right?. That assumes that someone will write a driver to create a virtual E: drive. Once you had this driver installed you'd be able to see the files on this E: drive.

Ok, that's fine for storage like photos, movies, audio. However, I don't think you could use it as extended memory for the phone, ie. you couldn't install 20 apps on your phone on the E: drive - they'd still need to install on the C: (or D:?) drive, and the phone would still be limited in the amount of memory available for executing code.

So that limits its usefulness, I think, since I still couldn't do more with my phone, all I could do is store more. Which I currently do on my laptop or main PC anyway.

dir.

Hmm, I agree but then again not! 😊

The 3650 uses the MMC as a D: drive which means that IF the BT HDD from Toshiba will ever be supported it would be exactly like the 3650 MMC! Programs to use the MMC must have a filemanager like interface like MP3Go does, for browsing the drive! Now installing software is a difficult one! Well lets just see how the 3650 will manage this, and maybe but unlikely there will be a FW upgrade! (dream on) 😃
