Got my 9500 and first thoughts

After having some initial doubts whether I should get a 9500 because of speed issues mentioned on this forum, I finally took the plunge. Ordered on Wednesday at 10.00am from Expansys and it arrived prompt 10.00am the following day. I did try to get one in Tottenham Court Road but every shop was sold out and was being quoted around 600ukp.

Now I would like to make it clear that some of my points may not be valid as I havent read through the manual to any degree yet as I prefer the play around method of learning. Id also like to say that I have tried just about every PDA series ever released from Psion, Palm, and Windows PPC. My PDA for last couple of years has been a P800 & P910 but I have really been missing a proper keyboard since the death of my Psion 5mx a few years back.

The first thing I noticed when opening the box was that it appears much smaller than the 9210, I know the stats state its just 10% lighter and just fractionally smaller, but the sleeker design gives the appearance of a non-brick like phone, for me its just small enough to whack into my jean pocket without feeling like Im carrying a lump around with me. Its certainly okay for carrying around in a suit jacket inside pocket.

The hinge is fairly light and I noted a forum member state that it was too light and it sort of just opened by itself when picking up, this is true if you lift up by the front screen, but you just lift the phone up by the bottom and there\s no problem (if thats clear??)this light hinge I find much more preferable, as it makes opening up the PDA effortless.

The screen is really nice, very bright and sharp and thoroughly readable outdoors, although I cant test for a bright sunny day because here in London, we dont get those this time of year J I do wish though the screen was touch sensitive, it would really aid navigation and I find that initially I was prodding the screen where Ive been so used the P910. Im not sure why this hasnt been implemented, is it a cost or other functionality issue like battery life?

The keyboard in my opinion is very good, not as good as say a Psion5 but its a far more compact unit than the P5. One niggle I do have is the key click volume option, normal and loud settings seem to be the same, this may be a bug, it would really aid me if the click was louder. I find the internal jog wheel to be much better than the 9210 and only very occasionally I have not got the correct press with it. I do think though these things are quite personal as my wife doesnt like it at all?? The jog button on front of phone isnt as good and I find it pretty bad.

The speed issues mentioned here are nowhere near as bad as I expected, for me its very acceptable switching between apps, but saying that I have only got around 50 contacts entered up out of the 900 I need to get on there, also my calendar just has a couple of months entered up so not sure how this would effect speed. There is some delay in a few functions such as opening up a document, or selecting a contact for an SMS message but again I find the delay perfectly acceptable.

The Wi-Fi connected without any problem. At work we use a Netgear wireless router, at home I have a Linksys router and both use WEP. It was as simple as selecting the Network, entering up the HEX code and that was it. Using the internet using the Wi-Fi connection was pretty frustrating. Pages loaded slowly, taking a fair bit of time to update images etc. Also with just 1 hours use I have had 2 error messages, one from this site and another from Google News, the error on one occasion needed a reset. Also surfing on such a small screen isnt pleasurable, especially without a touch screen. When using the browser a mouse arrow pops up and you use the navigator button to move it across the page to select items. I would only use the browser if I really had no other alternative option.

Synching has been a breeze but all I synch is Outlook calendar entries.

Other small niggles are:

1) No vibrating option..WHY?

2) The zoom does not zoom out enough for me, the smallest size font in contacts and calendar is too big, Ive got no idea why this wont go smaller as other programmes like Word the font goes much smaller.

3) The small screen on the phone displays contacts incorrectly, I cant seem to get it to view by business name, so where I have a Business name in contacts with no personal name, it just displays the phone number and no name, which makes it impossible to search from phone interface. I think this has been mentioned here and if this is the case (and not just me being thick), this is a very poor to have a bug of that degree.

4) Security locks arent flexible enough, I would like to see a password option every time I turn PDA on, there is a work-around but this only gives you an option of using a 5 digit number which is a pain to keep entering. Saying that there is a great facility to lock the phone remotely. All you do is set-up a remote password on the 9500 and then if the phone receives an SMS with that PWD it locks.

5) As far as I can see theres no auto key lock on phone keys, a ridiculous historical Nokia feature.

6) Cant seem to find an option to keep PDA screen from automatically turning off, say if you have on charge, so it keeps turning off.

Saying all that I am definitely going to keep with the 9500, the niggles to me are all very minor, and I am starting to really appreciate the 9500 and I am thoroughly pleased with the purchase. Comparing the P800/900/910 with the 9500, I would say the P series is a phone with PDA functions and the 9500 is a PDA with phone functions.

Increasing the cache size has been reported to speed things up a bit.

No vibrating option..WHY?

Most likely because of the size of the unit. The vibration motor would have to be so powerful to make any impact, that it might cause damage to other hardware components.

Can’t seem to find an option to keep PDA screen from automatically turning off

You could try LightPlus.

I am going to trade my unit when Treo 650 GSM version is out.... this is my first Nokia Communicator and would probably my last. The unit is too slow and the PIM is not vibrant. I miss my Agendus Pro..

In some areas I prefer the 92x0, but others the 9500 outshines it. The tactile response from the keyboard on the 9500 is laughable and the everso slightly compressed keyboard means typing is going to become more of a chore, but no doubt I'll get used to it. Similarly with the daft key layout such as where they moved "," and ".". Speed wise I dunno why anyone is complaining it's miles faster than the 9210. The screens seem miles better than the 9210s, very impressed and the unit feels better constructed on the whole. The hinge is stiff on mine, much stiffer than the 9210s which means it doesn't open too easilly and it doesn't look or feel as flimsy.

At the end of the day it's yet another brilliant device and another step in the right direction of a mobile device that could rival a S5MX. If only Nokia would make a bigger one with a larger keyboard.

I have now had my 9500 for a whole four days! Quite a change from my elderly Psion 5mx. I never gave in to the urge to learn graffiti and work without a keyboard. Overall it seems a good machine - time will tell if it lives up to my inial thoughts. Comments are as follows -

Keyboard is different - my fingers are too big, but no doubt it is somehting you get used to - once ou learn where the . & , are!

Applications are slow compared to 5mx. I do wonder if I have selcted recipient when waiting for SMS fields to fill in!

Had no problem connecting to home network (802.11b/g) Buffalo using WEP. need to find a way of stopping the auto disconnect (may even read the manula for this one!)

In contacts, there seems to be a lot of screen space wasted by saying "preferred" - why not just put an asterix against the default number? I also need to work out a way of have various contact lists (databases) so I do not have to scroll (or search) through every single contact each time I make a call. (Speed dial is already full!). Agrre with the comments re company

Calendar view is very poor in terms of the number of entries you can see per day in week view. Surely the ability to zoom can be added? If the 5mx (or even the 3c) can do it....

Seem to have "mastered" the internal jog button, but the external one leaves a lot to be desired.

Don't use Outlook so synching is not an issue!

Would appreciate improved security - again a la 5mx.

Why shouold we have to download add on software to get the screen to stay on? Nothing against the software, but htis was a standard set up feature in the 5mx.

Otherwise so far very happy!

Cheers,
Dave

getting my commie today...cant wait. bluetooth..EDGE. cant wait to check out EDGE on this phone. already applied for it & its been activated already.

@Hyper

really keen to hear about how EDGE performs compared to GPRS - here in the UK we don't have EDGE.

@all

re: preceived slowness of the 9500, new firmware is scheduled I have heard that should speed things up. But unlike the SE P9xx range, the firmware upgrades will probably not be online

dont worry..as soon as i get my phone..there will be all sorts of reviews from me & tons of pics as well.. i'm going to try out all software that i had for my 9210 as well..

Hyper myself and J2theIzzo have been trying that with our 9210 apps to see what we can make work, obviously almost all OPL apps seem to but many other progs dont 😞

just got my 9500 in my hands.
i have win xp (SP2) loaded on my laptop. got it up & running in no time.
My Software Ver is 04.44(01), Phone is MADE BY NOKIA.

More to come as & when i use it more...

I got mine yesterday as well! I agree on most parts except

Pop Port not really a pro, would have preferred a "normal" jack (2,5 or 3,5mm like P900)

I do miss the vibra, no biggie though
The inside navigator is NO problem to me at all
Apps aren't that slow IMO. After hearing all the bad stuff about it, it positively surprised me. Just keep apps open (don't close them!). Only slow thing is webbrowsing on WLAN (and yes, I did increase the catch size)

Congrats, HyPeR and Delta 😊

Turning off 'Simultaneous Bluetooth Usage' has also been reported to speed up the WLAN web browsing experience quite a bit (Control Panel --> Wireless LAN --> Settings --> Simultaneous Bluetooth Usage).

Thanks Raven.

I have already set it too off. I believe that's the best setting (although the only thing it asks is if I really want to connect with BT on, and I say yes anyway, maybe I shouldn't 😃 😉)
