Well congrats on you puschase. Leet me begin to tell that you just bought a Symbian based UIQ software phone and that is the marvelus thing.
SOFTWARES/Installation:
Basicly people complain about little software, well i think they wrong. There are a lot of them out there and most can be found here:
http://my-symbian.com/uiq/download/index.php
To brows "My-Symbian.com" site is a pain in the ass but let me tell you, its worth to take the time to read the software section (Big big big) and news section there. When your new to the phone i think this forum is the best to start with so welcome to my second rcomendation of good sites out there.
To make it a little easyer for you, the most Sony Ericsson P800 files will work on your Motorola A-1000...and basicly most af the previus phone models before A-1000, im talking about A-920 and A-925. (Nokia will not) If you find a intresting software, try to read comments about the program if anybody typed that it worked. If nothing has been said about it...listen to this....you can read the info about the software, if they explain it as a "Symbian based software" it also most certainly will work. When they in the info text specify that it will work on P800 and P900/P910 devices...its tricky, but it probably still will run. (Notice that i take no responsibility if your phone crash, read carfully before installing and you will work it self out as you gro in knowledge)
The install files for Symbian based phones are named ".sis" ... that can be compared to a ".exe" for windows. Also remember that not ALWAYS your instalation via the computer will work, then you can mail the software as an attachment and you install it from there (Ex. for this QuickOffice, awsome Office prg)
ABOUT TRACKER:
Look for Tracker and buy it, then download the free software "AppickerConfig" for Motorola. With this software you can change the menys on the upper top of the phone window. Works like a charm...The "Home" page that comes as startup page of the phone looses its purpose when you install Tracker so you will not feel that you have lost it, trust me, Tracker is a MUST! (Well, thats what i think =)
When you buy Tracker you will recive 2 free software that really kicks ass. Those are "File Man" (Works like a file browser) so you can brows ALL files on you Phone (Even hidden).
Second program is "Task Man" and is a Task manager like on your computer.... and i downloaded for ex. "Longhorn Aero" that does it in XP style and whips, you have more a computer than a phone =)=)=) The good thing about this skin exept that it is free and can bee found out in cyberspace (Google), is that it supports the software of a Motorola as it should be with all skins.
Last but not least, i for ex whant a real clean XP style on my phone, well you just make it your self.... just havent had time, god i wish there was any free XP skins out there looking good and like thru XP, i would pay for it.
KEYBOARD:
Yeah, i know it takes time to get comfortable with the phones keyboard, but take the time and do it, it will be easyer. But there is 2 other solutions out there.
Bluetooth keyboard:
www.thinkoutside.com has pruduced a bluetooth keyboard that works like a charm. Its foldblble so it can get real small and you can accsses most feauters in you phone and confic to some extant your own shortcuts. Im so happy when im typing on a Word doc or chatting with MSN that i have a hardware portable keyboard that works this good.
Sites to buy the keyboard:
www.mobilefun.co.uk
www.expanys.co.uk (or .se if you live in sweden)
Virtualkeyboard:
You can on my-symbain.com fin a virtual keyboard for easyer writing, there is even a lexicon there so have like a Nokia feat were your phone guesses what your want to type.
LAST WORDS:
As i said, welcome to symbian, as you see there are a lot to learn about this phone. Think about it as a Windows phone as Symbian actually is a OS, then you will se that most things can be done. The limitations is in you ,and, what im afraid to say, 3 Networks has installed on you.
Software i use today:
Tracker (Windows)
File Man (File Browser)
Task Man (Task Manager)
AppickerConfig (System bar manager)
QuickOffice (Word, Exel, Powerpoint)
SciCalc (Very good advanced calculator)
Zipper (Win Zip)
Blue Eyes (Picture browser tool)
Frodo (C64 emulator, works so so, i get wierd sound clicks)
InstantSymbian-NSM (MSN messeging)
N-Player (Musicplayer, play C64 SID files or Amiga Mod files)
OggPlay (If i need to play Vorbis ".ogg" files"
Smart Movie (Avi plaer, comes with a movie converter so you will get nice quality to you films)
UltraMP3 (Lets face it, inboard music player is uggly, get a new nice looking)
Psiloc Color Schemes (Change all coulors in your phone, menys etc)
Software from Psilock is to be watched out for, they annonce that it will work but Color Schemes is the only one that i will trust to work.
And i also just found aout that if there is a small guy devloping a software, you will get support like nowere else, the rock (Thanx all you prgamers out there)....when you buy QuickOffice, pray to good you will never need to contact them.... there support sux.
Okay, that is what my brain can take for now, feel free to ask questions... thats why were all here, just remember others name when your out there and they need hlp to know somtjing and you might know it.
Best Regards
