New a1000 is confused

10 replies · 3,844 views · Started 07 December 2004

Hi all just got my a1000 the other day on 3....its cool, i really wanted something that had pda capabilities and not just a phone...really impressed with it...except the handwriting thing which i think is a bit hard to use....but then again im a noob...

My question is though, what kind of software can i use on my phone? where do i get it? Is it UIT? and if so what does that mean?

I can use software that is intended for other phones...

Many thanks!

on reading what i have just written....dont bother answering as i can be bothered to make any sense...

One question though does anyone know if i can the stuff 3 has done to it? like change the desktop or such.....i was thinking of using tracker any one used tracker before?

Many thanks

You can install and run tracker but since most preinstalled apps dont have a quit option and you cant set tracker to the taskbar you end up having to run tracker from the menu every time youre done with one of the preinstalled apps (calendar, calling...well everything except picsel viewer i think). And that just makes it a pain using, hopefully there will be a a1000 adapted version of tracker soon.

I did see a way of of changing the short cuts that lead to music files, picture files and movie files to anything u want......cant find it now 😞

Well congrats on you puschase. Leet me begin to tell that you just bought a Symbian based UIQ software phone and that is the marvelus thing.

SOFTWARES/Installation:
Basicly people complain about little software, well i think they wrong. There are a lot of them out there and most can be found here:

http://my-symbian.com/uiq/download/index.php

To brows "My-Symbian.com" site is a pain in the ass but let me tell you, its worth to take the time to read the software section (Big big big) and news section there. When your new to the phone i think this forum is the best to start with so welcome to my second rcomendation of good sites out there.
To make it a little easyer for you, the most Sony Ericsson P800 files will work on your Motorola A-1000...and basicly most af the previus phone models before A-1000, im talking about A-920 and A-925. (Nokia will not) If you find a intresting software, try to read comments about the program if anybody typed that it worked. If nothing has been said about it...listen to this....you can read the info about the software, if they explain it as a "Symbian based software" it also most certainly will work. When they in the info text specify that it will work on P800 and P900/P910 devices...its tricky, but it probably still will run. (Notice that i take no responsibility if your phone crash, read carfully before installing and you will work it self out as you gro in knowledge)

The install files for Symbian based phones are named ".sis" ... that can be compared to a ".exe" for windows. Also remember that not ALWAYS your instalation via the computer will work, then you can mail the software as an attachment and you install it from there (Ex. for this QuickOffice, awsome Office prg)

ABOUT TRACKER:
Look for Tracker and buy it, then download the free software "AppickerConfig" for Motorola. With this software you can change the menys on the upper top of the phone window. Works like a charm...The "Home" page that comes as startup page of the phone looses its purpose when you install Tracker so you will not feel that you have lost it, trust me, Tracker is a MUST! (Well, thats what i think =)

When you buy Tracker you will recive 2 free software that really kicks ass. Those are "File Man" (Works like a file browser) so you can brows ALL files on you Phone (Even hidden).
Second program is "Task Man" and is a Task manager like on your computer.... and i downloaded for ex. "Longhorn Aero" that does it in XP style and whips, you have more a computer than a phone =)=)=) The good thing about this skin exept that it is free and can bee found out in cyberspace (Google), is that it supports the software of a Motorola as it should be with all skins.
Last but not least, i for ex whant a real clean XP style on my phone, well you just make it your self.... just havent had time, god i wish there was any free XP skins out there looking good and like thru XP, i would pay for it.

KEYBOARD:
Yeah, i know it takes time to get comfortable with the phones keyboard, but take the time and do it, it will be easyer. But there is 2 other solutions out there.

Bluetooth keyboard:
www.thinkoutside.com has pruduced a bluetooth keyboard that works like a charm. Its foldblble so it can get real small and you can accsses most feauters in you phone and confic to some extant your own shortcuts. Im so happy when im typing on a Word doc or chatting with MSN that i have a hardware portable keyboard that works this good.

Sites to buy the keyboard:
www.mobilefun.co.uk
www.expanys.co.uk (or .se if you live in sweden)

Virtualkeyboard:
You can on my-symbain.com fin a virtual keyboard for easyer writing, there is even a lexicon there so have like a Nokia feat were your phone guesses what your want to type.

LAST WORDS:
As i said, welcome to symbian, as you see there are a lot to learn about this phone. Think about it as a Windows phone as Symbian actually is a OS, then you will se that most things can be done. The limitations is in you ,and, what im afraid to say, 3 Networks has installed on you.

Software i use today:

Tracker (Windows)
File Man (File Browser)
Task Man (Task Manager)
AppickerConfig (System bar manager)
QuickOffice (Word, Exel, Powerpoint)
SciCalc (Very good advanced calculator)
Zipper (Win Zip)
Blue Eyes (Picture browser tool)
Frodo (C64 emulator, works so so, i get wierd sound clicks)
InstantSymbian-NSM (MSN messeging)
N-Player (Musicplayer, play C64 SID files or Amiga Mod files)
OggPlay (If i need to play Vorbis ".ogg" files"
Smart Movie (Avi plaer, comes with a movie converter so you will get nice quality to you films)
UltraMP3 (Lets face it, inboard music player is uggly, get a new nice looking)
Psiloc Color Schemes (Change all coulors in your phone, menys etc)

Software from Psilock is to be watched out for, they annonce that it will work but Color Schemes is the only one that i will trust to work.

And i also just found aout that if there is a small guy devloping a software, you will get support like nowere else, the rock (Thanx all you prgamers out there)....when you buy QuickOffice, pray to good you will never need to contact them.... there support sux.

Okay, that is what my brain can take for now, feel free to ask questions... thats why were all here, just remember others name when your out there and they need hlp to know somtjing and you might know it.

...that in other words, Ragga the poster above was very wrong, and if there is no close option, close it with "Task Man"...zip, done, complete ^^

wow Nakazul thanks a bunch! I hope you did nt type all of that! Or if you did you were using work time... 😉

I will have a look at appickerconfig to try and get tracker intergrated, that sounds like it will be very useful i will change the home icon to tracker...and remove some of the 3 garbage...like ringtone downloads......

That msn client you use will it work on the 3 network?

Does the longhorn aero skin work in tracker?

Oh another question how do i unistall software?

My phone is being a right pain wont backup 😞

I wrote this from the back of my mind on my spare time... right now im using my Thinkoutside keyboard on work time ^^

3 Network offers limitations to us users. But you phone is internet enabled, at least here in sweden, meaning ,MSN will work very good, im typing from it right now... pretty good it works also. Dont forget to check for updates when using MSN because Microsoft likes to update there services meaning that chatt softwares like this (and Miranda, and other non microsoft products will get connection probblems. WHat im trying ot say here is if MSN on you phone does not work, the problem is probebly not MSN service, not your phones fault.

The skin longhorn for Tracker is free and i use it on my A-1000 3 Network enabeld phone. All you need to do is find it, and all i support is tips, there are other cool free skins out there.

Hmm, did i get all answers, the syncing problem,. I have heard a lot of problems about this, i my self never experienced any trouble. But i read posts accusing the phone for a lot of bugs. Lets hope there wrong and you get it right. I think the sync idea is cind of...how should i say it, weak?... that in the termes that the construction feels pretty fragail. Just keep reading forums and in the syncing problem, i recomend hours of browsing through my-symbian.com forum.

When u get to use file man (Or other file browser software, there are others too)

Like i said, you will get full access browsing you phone, and that means you can see the locked 3 Network files too, but since the A-1000 has all ringtones, logostartup and other stuff on to A:/ ...you will not be able to change or delite any of this files. A drive is ROM based =[.... hope fully a hacker or somthing else will hel us with this little freedom issues that i for sure take for granted and misses. Remember also in this subject that when buying a software, you support the devlopers and that i think is very importent being a so small community as we are right now (but were growing).
Well, im getting out of hand here ^^ Hope you get your phone to work ok.

You had that little post also, shouldnt be typing from work, kind of stressing.

To uninstall:
In the far upper right corner you will find system icon, click that (Beside you contact icon), once ther its easy, klick on launcher in the menu list and you will find uninstall.
