14 replies · 5,221 views · Started 07 December 2004

I believe the a1000 is capable of sending and recieving emails....i do hope so else i bought the wrong phone!!

Is it possible to read hotmail/gmail etc on my a1000 and send from my hotmail/gmail accounts too?

Many thanks

You can set up email accounts in the control panel. But if you are using 3, you won't be able to use them, because you can't access the internet using 3.

Bye,

Alex

so the phone is capable? but i cant do it because of 3! Thats silly.....why wont they let me?

Considering dumping my three contract if this is the case and going with someone else...

The three network (at least here in the UK) is a "walled garden". You can access special websites prepared by Three, but you cannot access the "free internet". Therefore, it is impossible to connect to POP3 or IMAP servers (except the 3mail-server)...

And yes, another network offering normal GPRS / UMTS (3G) internet access would allow you to use email and html-websites with the A1000...but don't forget, your A1000 is currently locked to the Three-network, so you have to unlock it first...

Alex

You can use the 3mail icon in the browser to access pop3 email. Press the triangle key, go to mail, then press the mail header, look in mail settings then manage other mail. You can shorten the time by adding a shortcut to the mail icon in the saved pages section.
Unfortunately microsoft want you to look at the adverts on their website so this does not allow access to hotmail but pop3 works fine. The people at google are however great and let you forward mail to your 3mail account for direct access via the phones messaging menu.

"Walled garden" that is so frustrating, thats like tying your shoes laces together when wearing some running shoes.....3 limiting my accesss make me mad!!

fury, i like that idea tho, i could set up a forward rule in my gmail might solve it as a work around..

i thought 02 was bad .....now i hate 3 too....must be a decent mobole phone company in the Uk somewhere...

Mind you i should not moan the a1000 was free with my contract...

As far as I understand that, this is only a forwarding and a "3mail gets the mails for you so you can download them from 3mail". But to be honest, most times you have more than one business account and even a private post box.
It would be nice to be able to download them separately and not via a detour (would work but not with the internet restriction).
And the phone would be able to manage several inbox-folders and IMAP as well...Three really has to learn that we want full internet access and not a childish looking "download the newest ringtones"-webpage!

In Australia the 3 network is walled, but there are instructions on the 3 website to set up another Internet Account which allows free browsing and POP/IMAP access to the internet.

I have done this and collect email from my work POP3 account fine.

Cheers,
Dave

I use www.Fastmail.fm to gather email from different accounts and forward them (using rules) to my 3 mobile. Works well and handles hotmail. There is a one-off sign up fee of 14.95 and an 80M transfer limit (actually shows 240M when I log in) but havent got anywhere near it in first couple of months. Might be worth checking out.

A1000 can receive and send E-mail by proper setting up in yahoo.com, but u cannot send or receive in Hotmail. You can also browse the internet at anytime by A1000 apart from the expensive GPRS fee.

In Australia 3 do not have 'walled garden' internet access. It tells you how to do it because its not walled. This is also the case for sweden...

In the UK its completely different matter the 3 network actually restricts you from browsing outside of 3 portal no matter what settings you change/add.

I spoke to Three customer services recently regarding this as I bought this phone partly for this feature and the person in the shop and the manual both state that retrieving third party mail is possible.

Three customer service confirmed this to be true too on the phone, but no one was available to talk me through the problem I was facing with it.

I currently have two external email accounts and a Threemail set up on my phone. The Threemail works fine, but the external two have problems connecting which is what I would expect with their 'walled garden', but aparantly Three will allow POP3, IMAP and SMTP traffic through according to their customer services and the manual.

I think this needs looking in to though as it would appear they are wrong, so I will contact them again and post back when I get a response.

This works for people in australia, if you use the username of a and the password of a, but it doesn't work for us people in the UK.

I just tried this to confirm and nope, not working here in the UK. :frown:
