I got a VIRUS,

Maybe this is why I have been having so many problems,

As I was backing up my phone so that I could install the new f/w Norton popped up with the following virus SymbOS.Skulls.B

It may be worth running anti virus software on you phones just in case,

I haven't a clue where it came from, since the previous f/w release and a clean install I have only installed a handfull of programs.

Well here's fingers crossed with the install and I hope it solves my problems

It is not a virus, but another kind of malicious program. And most likely it was among the handful of programs you installed and that's why you got it (it didn't end up on your phone by magic). Next time, I suggest you don't download software from dubious sources.

Hmmm not sure what you are suggesting but anyway norton says it is a virus that was discovered on 30th November, now since the only software that I have installed is fscaller, a torch program and a couple of games all legitimately sourced and installed directly after the previous firmware at the begining of september then I would suggest that I aquired it through an email or text message and not "dubiously sourced software"

Thank you very much

Norton may label it as a virus, but its actuallly isnt, rather a poorly coded application. It should'nt do any harm to your phone, but may make some applications inaccessable and replace icons with a Skull.

This was reported on quite a few websites a coiuple of weeks ago, though i cannot remember any addresses off the top of my head.

Just been doing some other reading

It appears that it can infect other phones in some way

The Cabir dropped by Skulls.B does not activate automatically, but if user goes to the cabir icon in the phone menu and runs Cabir from there. The Cabir.B will activate and try to infect other phones.

Hi,

Does anyone actually have this virus (as a SIS file) ?

I would be keen to get it (no questions asked!) to help us ensure the Sendo X will be OK for this kind of attack.

From what I have read, it seems to be based around the Nokia Theme system, and as our themes are different to that, it may be that the Sendo X will be OK.

Would still like to check though... PM me with a link if possible.

Thanks,

Kev

It is not a Series 60 Theme thing: http://www.f-secure.com/v-descs/skulls.shtml

"it is just a Symbian Installation file that installs critical System ROM binaries into C: drive in with exact same names and locations as in the ROM drive."

"The malicious part is in the AIF (Application Info and icon) file which comes with the applications. Instead of correct AIF file the Skulls SIS will install AIF file that has Skulls and crossbones as icon and instead of real application it will point to nowhere."
