Hi All,

I bought a P910i recently and want to learn & develop few applications on it.. I need some help from you guys bout it..

(just to let you know that I know C++ and Java and working as a developer since past 4 years and I wrote small applications for my personal use in C for Linux and also know bit of Linux OS essentials.. )

I learnt that the SDK 2.1 should be used with CodeWarrior or BuilderX for C+=... but there is noway that I am gonna purchase these products to develop applications for my personal use.. are ther any free IDEs available or is there anyway that I can use normal text editors and still develop applications no matter if I have to do some extra work like command line operations to compile and all.. but the only important thing is the emulator.. does symbian provide emulator for it..

or if you can give me a step by step procedure (with no purchased IDEs).. that would be really greatful..

onemore thing is have anybody read the press books published by Symbian.. I want to purchase one of them.. can you give me the review of them.. are they good for learning..

thanks
Shyam

Hi Shyam

Over at the Symbian developer FAQs there is an article about the problem you're having - making me believe that you're not the first one with this problem😉 Have a look at http://www3.symbian.com/faq.nsf/0/E961EA6C04EA6BF080256EDD0055D063?OpenDocument (alternatively, go to symbian.com > Developer > FAQs > Browse or search the FAQ and Tech Tip Database > Search > (search for IDE) > click FAQ-1099).

These tools are for free, that is if you want to go for MS tools. Of course, you can use a text editor if you like, although I haven't tried that myself. Over at the Nokia forum (forum.nokia.com) there are docs on "Getting Started with C++ Application Development". A short worthy reader with a step-by-step guide.

Since you can't buy Microsoft Visual C++ 6.0 (caution not the .NET version, which is not fully supported) anymore, you can try to get a cheap version off ebay if you like. MS Visual C++ 5.0 should also still work AFAIK.

I bought both volumes of "Symbian OS C++ for Mobile Phones" and think they are worth their money. Depending on the platform (Series 60, UIQ etc.) you're developing for, you might also want to consider literature on these. There is a good one by Leigh Edwards of EMCC "Developing Series 60 Applications : A Guide for Symbian OS C++ Developers (Nokia Mobile Developer)". I'd recommend Volume 1 of the Symbian book if you'd only buy one for the time being. It provides a good start into the matter, takes you through various Symbian specific implementations and are fine if you know C and C++.

Hope that helps for now. Let me know if not.
