LAY-z, If you're new here and only have 3 posts, I wouldn't be too quick to judge this site's people as unhelpful. Anyone can just take a look at the volume/number of posts (the thousands and thousands of questions/problems and their answers), and immediately see that it is not true.

Do note that this is not any kind of official support forum without any guarantees for answers or their accuracy. The tone and language of posts (or lack thereof) will have a big impact on people. Badly or rudely phrased questions, or those that are not understandable might be left unanswered (just as rude or impolite people, or people that don't otherwise make sense are ignored in the physical world, too).

And, sometimes, people just don't know the answer. Nobody knows everything, even if collectively this community probably does know a whole lot more than any one individual.

Anyway...

The role and importance of both built-in software and additional software determines the nature, features and functionality of any mobile phone, and so called smartphones in particular.

The built-in software includes the phone's operating system, applications, etc., and is stored in read-only memory (ROM). The built-in software is called the phone's "firmware" (as opposed to other software or the hardware).

On today's phone's ROM is based on so called Flash ROM chips, that can be rewritten using special software and hardware. So flashing or reflashing means more or less reinstalling the phone's software. This makes it possible to also get newer releases of the firmware (updated, with bugfixes, new/different languages, etc.).

On most devices this flashing procedure is done by service/repair centers, but on some models it could also be doable by the phone's user/owner.

If you know PC's, this is much like upgrading the BIOS, Basic Input/Output Software, on a PC.

And about "pm": Here it usually refers to the private messaging system on this site (where you can send messages to people without posting them in the public forums). They're available in the "User CP" section for registered, logged in users:
