Using this 6630 for me is like using two Nokia phones at the same time: my FIRST and my LAST! I am getting really upset with the way Nokia has crippled this potentially great phone.
I don't understand why it is not possible to define data connections (CSD calls) in the phone. the only allowed bearer type is "packet data" (i.e. GPRS). WHY??
Another problem is that if I use the phone as a modem still I can use it as a GPRS modem but data calls are dropped. I can see that the number is dialled and a "D" appears in the call bubble in the display but immediately the call is dropped. This could be a problem with my service provider but if I use my SonyEricsson GSM phone I can make data calls on the same network without problems.
All these problems added to the lack of BT serial port support and the choice of add-on memory that is basically not available anywhere are really spoiling my experience with this phone. I was expecting to use it as a replacement for my PocketPC as mp3 player but I still need the PocketPC to listen to mp3s (I have a 512MB SD card in it, not a 64MB RS-DV-non-existent-MMC!!!). I was expecting to browse the web via my ADSL connection at home but I still need my PocketPC for this. I was hoping I could sync my work mail while at work and read it on the move but this is not possible, I still need my PocketPC for this....
I don't know... maybe my expections were too high but all the things I mentioned so far can be done using a Windows Mobile phone so it shouldn't be too difficult to offer it in a phone by Nokia (the company with the biggest market share for handsets).
My impression is that Nokia choices are made to please network operators not the people who buy their phones.

Data calls (from PC) work if the phone is under GSM coverage, they don't work under UMTS. The problem is that TIM has both networks in my city and the phone likes UMTS more than GSM..... is there a way to force it to attach to the GSM network?

CSD is an old and very slow technology and its logical that its absent in a phone primary made for 3G,or GSM with EDGE or the worst possibility GPRS 😃

Yes, and as I pay my bills myself I better like to pay for the utilized bandwidth (i.e. GPRS/EDGE, UMTS) than just the online time CSD --> with even multiplied with number of timeslots HSCSD. Ok, with HSCSD you'll get the ~40 kbit/s guaranteed but it's quite heavy on your wallet! Once the EDGE & UMTS really are more available they'll satisify the mobile surfers' needs.
I understand all the advantages of faster connections (I wouldn't have bought this phone) but there are situations where a data call is necessary. One example is if you have a pc at home and you want to dial-up into it to get a file or something.
Even if other connection options are faster I don't understand why the phone doesn't support CSD access points.

From the manual:
Operator selection - Select Automatic to set the phone to search for and select one of the available networks, or Manual to manually select the network from a list of networks. If the connection to the manually selected network is lost, the phone will sound an error tone and ask you to reselect a network. The selected network must have a roaming agreement with your home network, that is, the operator whose SIM card is in your phone.

Unfortunately the manual selection doesn't work the way I need. If I choose TIM GSM it replies "Home network selected" and keeps roaming between UMTS and GSM according to best coverage.

Maybe it's a bug in the TIM software.

Soo you're calling to your own PC's modem and thus establishing a data call session? Interesting. That's truly a use-case where the GPRS is not suitable!
This is the identical problem to what I have been suffering on my vodafone 6630, it dials than drops the connection, at least it not just a problem with my phone, still bloody annoying, will see if I can find a work around
