Nokia 6620 as modem

Is there a complete idiot's guide to using my Nokia 6620 as a modem or using its GPRS connection to get my laptop on the web? I've read over every post I could find on numerous sites but nothing works.

Here's my specs:

  • Laptop with Windows 2000 SP 4
  • Nokia 6620 - Cingular is the service provider and I have the unlimited access Media Works feature
  • Nokia PC Suite 6.4.8
  • Bluetooth/USB adapter (Linksys USBBT100) running correctly on my laptop
  • I can browse the web successfully from my 6620 using the built in browser as well as the included Opera browser
  • I've been able to browse the 6620 using the Bluetooth connection and have successfully transferred files so I know the bluetooth is working

From my Windows Control Panel I used the Phone and Modem Options screen to add the Nokia 6620 Bluetooth modem to my PC and I set it to COM 7 (nothing else is on that COM port).

Then from the Network and Dialup Connections screen I created a new connection. During the new connection wizard I've tried using both the "Dial up to private network" as well as the "dial up to the internet" options. No matter which option I use I make sure I select the Nokia 6620 Bluetooth modem and I've been trying to use *99# as the phone number. Some sites say leave the username/password blank while others say use "[email protected]" for the username and "CINGULAR1" as the password. I've tried doing both with no luck.

When I do try to connect using the various settings I've tried I always get this error message:
Error 692: there was a hardware failure in the modem (or other connecting device)

If anyone has a step by step tutorial they know of it would be greatly appreciated if you could share that info. Any input helping this novice out will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks but I've had no luck. When I run the One Touch Access program I set it to use the Nokai 6620 Bluetooth modem and I set it to Cingular USA as the service operator. When I click Connect it says it fails to connect to the phone. No error message is given other than a message saying it failed to connect to the network and that it could not connect to the selected device.

Does your Cingular subscription/plan permit GPRS Internet data access in the first place?

yes, and I got it working using the bluetooth modem device created by my bluetooth adapter

not sure why it's working now and wasn't earlier

I'm having exactly the same problem. I'm connecting a W2K Professional laptop, running a Belkin USB Adapter Bluetooth to a Nokia 6620 phone, running on Cingular GSM network with the MEdia Net server. I'm communicating/synchronizing between the phone and the PC using the bluetooth adapter, but can't figure out the instructions for using the phone as a modem. Has anyone gotten this to work? Any help/ideas would be great. Thanks!

hey try this since you have cingular and see it this works

I am using my 6620 as a modem via BT right now. To do this, you need two things; from AT&T Wireless ( now Cingular...but don't use their app, it dosent support BT) you want to use the "Communication Manager 4.1" and even add the "NettGain Optimization" software.

Here's the details and i'll add as many links to get these apps as I can.

AT&T Wireless Communication Manager software connects mobile devices and laptops to the Internet and corporate networks. With access to email, the Internet, business applications and corporate intranets, your mobile employees can be much more productive while they're out of the office.

AT&T Wireless Communication Manager software allows your workforce to get started quickly and easily.

* Easy installation
* Simple and powerful user interface
* Supports compatible PC Card modems and phones used as wireless modems
* Management of multiple wireless network connections, if needed
* Nearly twice the speed of any other national network the EDGE network offers average speeds of 100-130 Kbps

Use Communication Manager 4.1 if you:

* would like one seamless wireless connectivity solution to access a variety of wireless networks including wide-area wireless networks (GPRS/EDGE/UMTS) and Wi-Fi hotspot connections
* regularly connect to a corporate network via a Virtual Private Network (VPN)
* use a compatible PC card modem or phone as a wireless modem.

Download Communication Manager 4.1 (Build 4.1.13

Optimize Connection Speeds
Boost connection speeds with NettGain Optimization software and Communication Manager. NettGain increases the speed of wireless access with compression technology and optimization techniques. It provides fast, robust access to the Internet, email, intranets and applications, so your mobile workforce can be even more productive - all at no additional charge.

Note: NettGain optimizes Internet traffic only. It does not optimize data transferred over a VPN or a Wi-Fi connection. Optimization is not recommended in conjunction with UMTS devices. Optimization is designed to increase effective network throughput, not the actual speed of the wireless network.

If you would like Optimization and you have already installed Communication Manager.

download NettGain Optimazation

If neither one of the links work, the address I got the info from is ... http://www.attwireless.com/smallbusiness/services/mobility/communicationmgr.jhtml
