The Dummies Guide To Writing A Symbian Virus

4 replies · 9,165 views · Started 29 December 2004

You know all those virus/trojans that are heralding the death of Symbian? Well, most of the peope who have any sensible knowledge of whats going on will realise it's all based on one bit of code with the name changed and a new procedure. So watch out everyone, because it jsut went Open Source (reports The Register). Lots of wacky names, strange things going on, and all preventable if you just leave bluetooth off till you need it, and don't load strange apps from warez sites.

Yep, and you don't even have to leave Bluetooth off, simply don't install any application which origin is unknown. Fortunately these so called "viruses/trojans" still need to be installed by the user to take affect.

If someone is dull enough to install a file on their PC called "This_Is_a_Virus.exe", then they're dull enough to install a virus on their Smartphone.

The only way Symbian could be modified to stop this would be it to not allow people to install software at all, unlike Microsoft based viruses which slip up the back passage before you can say Jack Robinson.

Or only "Symbian Signed" software. Which, believe it or not, may actually be the future for Symbian phones (read: http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/forum//forum/thread/31863/).

Makes you think even harder about who's actually behind all this Symbian virus hype, doesn't it?

What surprises me is that this shows that people have had a good attempt at writing viruses for the Symbian OS.

If these are the best that they have come up with then Symbian is obviously pretty secure!
