9500 Email Functionality

14 replies · 4,070 views · Started 06 January 2005

I've been using a Treo 600. One of the best features is the Blackberry type functionality, where the phone automatically retrieves checks and retrieves email set periods (eg every 20 minutes). (It simply polls the pop accounts every twenty minutes).

can some someone tell if the Nokia 9500 (or a third party app) has this functionality?

Thanks.

It will have on the Q1 of 2005 (as mentioned before in the forum)

You can see the press release here:

Thanks for reply.

However, what i was after something more like Cibenix's ActiveMail, that polls for the email at set intervals.

The chances of one of the telecom carriers allowing blackberry connectivity from anything other than a RIM device is almost nil (for the foreseeable future at least), Thats in part why the Treo 600 is cool tool for those users that aren't attached to big corporations.

I hoping the N9500 can be that new cool tool.

We are doing this using WEA synching with Lotus Notes every 10 minutes. Works great

WEA/WECM still has some problems, but it's a great setup once all the minor problems get fixed. Especially for those that don't have blackberry supporting operators around 😊

Thanks for the update... Not quite sure what WEA / WECM are? (and i thought myself tech.. ha!) Yo don't know of any software solutions similar to Active Mail (for old Nokia's) what would allow the polling of a pop account?

I'm currently using a tool on my treo called SnapperMail, which has features to set the login-in-and-check-for-mail intervals. In this situation (and for Active Mail) it is the device that is initiating the mail check.

Thanks, A

Just a quick update to seal off this Post. I have been in contact with the developers of Active Mail and a new 9500 / 9300 version will be available in about a month.

Thanks to all for your assistance.

What problems are you having with WEA by the way?

Phil

Well, problems might be a bit too "harsh" word. Maybe "childs diseases". Double calendar entries, bad syncs, sync all not working and so forth. I think it's a great tool, but I was expecting more based on what I had heard 😊

I bet it goes on improving...

That's good news, you didn't happen to ask about ActiveDesk did you...?

yes i've sent an email to them, they replied that these software's will be out soon. so we just have to wait.

JOE are you still using WEA? Hopefully you are an expert by now as I need some help!

WE have a problem where the WEA server is timing out with my phone devices after five minutes (which I think is a value hard coded). The problem is when large mail files exit the WEA server is communicating with the Notes server fine and is transferring data but the Nokia client is just sat there waiting. After 5 mins it times out 😡

Do you have any ideas on how I can get round this JOE? Also do you know any great WebSphere forums anywhere?

Thanks Phil

Winboy have you seen Automail from Steve at 3-Lib?

It's not too sophisticated yet as it's only a beta but it does the job!

As for Blackberry compatibility in Q1 I wouldn't hold my breath - I bought the 9500 hoping I could use it instead of a Blackberry for my office email, but I spoke to Vodafone this week and they said Rim and Nokia are having arguements over the licencing deal and they don't have date when the Blackberry compatibility will be available!
