Finally got it!

My 7710 came today...! So far, I've these things to share:

1. My TWINMOS 1GB MMC card works fine, although the nokia website says it only supports up to 512MB.
2. Synchronising with Outlook works, but with about 1300 contacts, slows the unit down to a crawl when browsing the phonebook. Totally unusable - I ended up deleting everything (couldn't find a reset function) and only importing the 130 contacts from my SIM card.

I'm looking for:

1. a screen protector
2. a belt pouch
3. software

If anyone finds what I'm looking for, please email me!!! It would be GREATLY appreciated.

There isn't much available because it so new, but I know there is a lot of software ready to go (e.g. Mobipocket, Pdf+, WorldMate etc etc.) You could try contacting some of the bigger software houses direct to see if they can help you.

Out of interest where did you get it from?

I'm in Malaysia and I'm from the media. I won the phone (along with 3 others) at the launch event about 2 weeks ago. Stocks only came in last week and the retail price is RM2,788 or approx. US$736.

Just a quick update... today the 7710 DIED! How did it happen? Well, I was setting up voice tags for voice dialling and everything worked fine. A few hours later, as I was shopping for a bluetooth headset, I noticed that the phone refused to voice-dial (either from the phone itself or via the headset). Thinking maybe it was some setting, so I took it to the Nokia service centre which was in the shopping arcade. They said the software looks like it was corrupted. The guy mentioned that I MUST use the 128MB MMC card that came with the phone, because there were some system files on it. Also, I could have the same files loaded on any MMC card, but with a US$15 charge. He turned the unit on/off several times and after that, a message popped up saying "Device startup failed. Please contact retailer" or something to that effect. The guy said that the unit was screwed and advised me to take it to their headquarters, 2 buildings away, which I did. Walked there and the lady said "sorry... this unit is too new... we don't have the firmware for it yet(!)"

Needless to say, I wasn't impressed. I'm a bit suspicious about what that guy said regarding the MMC card and the system files. He blamed the fact that I was using the phone without the original MMC, thus corrupting the phone's software. Is this possible? Or just some poppycock?

That's just bullsh!t. He was obviously trying to make a quick buck... Even if there were some important system files on the MMC (highly unlikely) you could just have copied them over yourself.

This could probably have been resolved if there was a way to format the device. Have you tried taking out the battery and leaving it out for a while, and then turn it on? If the system is corrupt you should get some sort of a message confirming this at start up, and then a message suggesting a format of the internal drive.

That stuff about the MMC is highly unlikely if you ask me. What would happen if you removed the MMC for some reason... Of course it might be true of veyr early version (pre-production?).

@kengsim, man sorry to hear about your troubles. I will avoid voice tags for now. Also does some one know how to hard reset the 7710? I know about the 9500 but not sure which button options are needed on the 7710.

@kengsim

hmm...I just checked dmy 128MB MMC, it does have a system folder on it and some sample video files (I used a new 512MB MMC instead of the 128 MB MMC). The samples look very good!
😉

Well, according to them, when that message pops up at startup, it means the unit is completely dead and there's no way to start it up. I did try turning it on many times, with/without the MMC card and it seems that they are right.

I don't think it was the voice tags. I just happened to be doing voice tags when it died. Problem is that there's no soft reset button. Maybe the turning on/off multiple times killed it somehow.

The other thing, according to those fellas is that both the 7710 and 9500s now use the same system, i.e. part of the system files are on the MMC. They've also seen several 9500s dead in the same way.

Hmm....

@kengsim, when you format a MMC the 7710 creates a System folder on the MMC, so as long as you fotmat the MMC in the 7710 you should be okay (same with the 9500).
😉

well, thats preety lame for such a phone, not being able to handel 1300 records. man i have more then 1000+ records and my main intention of buying this phone is to get ride of my plam PDA which has these records. i am very very disappointed.

There Must be some way to Reset the Phone. As This Happend in My 7650, 2 Years Back i have to contact the Retailer and then New Firmware was put. And agin this happend to in 2003 in My Nokia 6600 " Phone Startup Failed Contact The Retialer" Then i just do format
i.e Green Butten, # and 3.
then My Phone Start Working Properly.
As the Formatting Command only works on Symbian Series 60 v 2.
and Formatiing Command For 9200 Series is also avialble.

Then There must Be some Code For New Nokia 90 Series Also.
It must help you.

Hmm....

That's hilarious. There wasn't even a MMC card in my 9500 package (and it has been running fine without it I must add)!

Exactly what I was just about to say!, the MMC should have no effect on the working of the phone at all!, and i'm pretty sure it doesn't.

For some reason your phone has crashed, the failed to startup message you are getting is the same with most Nokia phones when there are problems, there probably is a way to do a hard reset (Unless this has to be done from the menu screen). Otherwise, you just need a new firmware flash (No matter if it is new firmware or just a reflash of existing firmware).

If you are press, i've give Nokia PR a call and explain to them the problem you are having with the phone, failing that call a technical support line and ask them if there is a hard reset feature in the phone.

LOL, I called up the product manager and will be getting a brand new phone on Monday, hopefully. I suppose that's the right thing to do since they don't have the firmware to fix it anyway.

He's not technical, so I can't ask him about the MMC thing. I'd really love to get to the bottom of this.

wow been a while i haf not join this forum...got my 7710 so far no prob and for formatting the phone u gyz try to read the user guide there is a section where it teaches us to format the phone by pressing several buttons on the 7710
