How to get contact list from excel to 9500

Hello All

I have a contact list in an excel spreadsheet format that I need to load onto 250 Nokia 9500 Communicators.

I am really stuck as I have no idea how you would go about doing this.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks for your help

Phil

You could put it on one communicator by using any way like typing it into the Contacts application or by synchronizing with a pc and then use the built in Backup Feature to backup the Contacts only and then restore this Contacts backup on the other 249 communicators.

Hi PhilF

If you have MS Outlook, simply use Outlook's import (File -> Import and Export -> Import from another program or file, click Next and choose Microsoft Excel) and then synchronize the first 9500. From there on you can try what eshahwe wrote. I don't know if Nokia's built-in Data Transfer app (which you can find in the tools folder) allows contacts sync.

Hope this helps.

Hi guys.

Thanks for your responses so far. So far I have created the excel spreadsheet, imported into outlook and Synchronised with the Telephone. I then did a backup and chose just to backup the contacts to the MMC card. I then took the MMC card and restored the backup on another phone.

My question is will this overwrite any settings or JUST the contacts? It seems to be OK but are there any changes this makes that I need to be aware of?

Also how important is the Reboot? After the backup restore it asks for a reboot. It seems to work ok without rebooting the phone. I REALLY don't fancy taking the batteries out of 250 communicators and waiting for them to reboot.

Does somebody know a clever way to reboot the phone without taking the battery out? The only way I can think of is to change the "Allow remote locking message" it then asks you to press reboot. Surely this means there is a reboot command somewhere. It must call some application or script from somewhere when you press reboot!

Can any genius think of a better way to sync these conacts?? I was thinking could I put the contact list on Outlook on a remote server and get all the phones to sync with that server. Would that work?

Phil

What you have done will just overwrite the contacts. The reboot is not necessary when you restore Contacts. Its only necessary when you restore settings of the whole device although it still works ok. So far there are different ways of rebooting the device:

1)One is by removing the battery which is painful
2)Changing the "Allow remote locking message" it then asks you to press reboot
3)Changing the language of the device, DESK->TOOLS->CONTROL PANEL->GENERAL->DEVICE LANGUAGE which asks to reboot
4)Using the Rebooter application which sometimes doesnt work ok
5)Pressing Ctrl + Shift + Chr + K few times will reboot the device, but is not a safe method, it kills applications rather than closing them and could potentially harm the device,
6)AppMan, which isnt out yet, this will probably reboot the device ok

By the way, what do you use 250 Communicators for?

we are rolling out communicators round the world to top managers at company i work for so they can use it as an always device to send an receive information. Mainly email (Lotus Notes via WEA/WECM), Lotus Sametime instant messaging, in the future blackberry client etc.

They have to be rolled out by Friday so frantically trying to build them and get the ready!!!! 😊

Thanks for your help on the reboot. Simple reboot app would be nice wouldn't it!!

Unless you know a way I can sync say 20 at a time?

Phil

No I don't know how to do 20 at a time, but while you're copying from A to B, you can use C to copy to D, and when they're done you've got 4 to use as "masters" - but you're right, that's quite a lot of work.

I assume that InfraRed would be easier (and faster) to use for the transfer tho.

Just copy this created contacts.cdb file on your memory card (or on each memory card) using card reader, into the proper folder (DATA) and you have it as a secondary database now. Then you can manage it directly on each N9500 (as soon as you put this card into the communicator you have two contact databases here, and you can copy/move contacts between them).

Do all of those communicators have memory card? If no, you can use the single "shared" one, if necessary, and use it around all devices subsequently.
Insert the card, copy contacts from the secondary database to the primary one, remove the MMC, and do the same on all other devices.

i have now completed this task by backing up the contacts to the MMC card. I then put all the other bits and pieces of data I wanted on the memory card. Then I copied this on memory card reader onto my laptop (USB 2 is great 😃 ) . I then pasted the data onto the other 249 cards. On each phone I changed memory card name and shortcuts to data on the cards and restored the contacts from bakup. Did not bother re-booting.

Was not that bad at all really.
