Lasco.A is the latest virus on Series 60

Via those excellent virus trackers at F-Secure comes news of another Series 60 virus. This one has is a bit different since it actually modifys SIS files on your phone. Thus gving another infection route (when you send a friend the SIS file). It also has the usual spread by Bluetooth infection route too. Forunately there are, as yet, no reports of this in the wild.

It's taken them some time, and they've finally made a virus that almost does the job as per PC spec. Good job F-secure on making that. Cynic, me, never.... On the plus side at least the F-secure antivirus software is free download.

But how many users keep original installation SIS files lying around on their units for beaming to others? With memory being at a premium, surely it's natural to delete the SIS files after installation?

Hence my comment on almost, heh. That said I've a fair few SIS files on my 9500 left behind by the installer that I'm yet to delete. Their best bet for mass infection would be to somehow infect .jar files, those are more likely to be sent between devices and would be good for infection purposes.

And after installation, don;t you have a stub .sis left over to track your installed apps?

Hats off to F-Secure...

Actually I do keep a fairly large number of sis files on my device. Its not so much sharing but installing them again (different devices etc.)

Hats off to F-Secure...

But, but, splutters, the stub SIS files are tiny and couldn't be used for beaming to others anyway!!!

Maybe a valid threat will emerge eventually, but I'm not convinced yet...

TBH I think they just aren't trying hard enough. Lets face it a computer is like a car, if a theif knows what he's doing and really wants your car, the extra security you put on it will slow him down by seconds. Similarly Symbian may be inherently more secure than windoze, but by now I'd have thought that they'd have come up with something convincing as a virus. So far they just seem mellow programs to shift antivirus tools.

But imagine the number of regualr users who look through their phones and find 10 SIS files.... these mustbe full of viruses!!! ARGH!!!!
