Here are the problems I found with the 7710 (fimware rev. Vp 02.08.1)
1. Contact Template
- If user modifies the default contact template (e.g. add Telephone (Home)), the phone doesn't save the changes. If user turns it on/off, the template will go back to the original.
- If user already has contacts with Telephone (Home) details added, clicking on them will cause a "Unexpected End of File" error. That contact is not accessible (i.e. cannot delete, view, etc).
- To view these contacts, user must once again add the Telephone (Home) field to the template. However, this must be done everytime the phone is turned off.
2. Voice Tags
- User can enable and use voice tags. However, after using the phone for a few hours (I did some surfing, messaging and turning it on/off), the voice tags no longer worked. I can't pinpoint what caused it, but I suspect it was the on/off causing the problem.
- Pressing and holding the voice record button now no longer turns on voice dialling. However, I can still hear all the voice tags I recorded earlier.
Can anyone corroborate my findings?
OK, here's what happened. I came back from the Nokia service centre today with a new 7710 and I managed to kill it in 30mins. I then called up the Product Manager who promptly came over to my office with another new unit. This time, I showed him the problems and he admitted that there was something seriously wrong. He's forwarded my complaint to HQ (in Finland) and hopefully they'll come up with a solution soon.
Oh, one last thing... don't power up the unit without your SIM card inserted. I killed the second unit that way. It gave the usual "SIM card not inserted. Emergency calls only" (or something to that effect) and then the dreaded message "Device startup failed" appeared. Thinking back, that was also how the first unit died (iirc).
Some more software issues in 7710.
1. in my last couple of days of usage: the phone has hung a couple of times while switching from an app to the Main Menu.
2. Today after finishing a call, I key-locked the device, after which it got hung in the key-lock mode.. Nothing worked after that.. I called myself from another phone, I could hear the ring, but the 7710 didnt budge, no rings, no lights.. I had to remove the battery to shut down the phone and restart..
3. BLUETOOTH: Tried to transfer an image from a T610, it couldnt locate the 7710 device (bluetooth was on).. Then I asked someone else to transfer the IMAGE from a nokia 7650, it could locate my device and also transfer the image.. The image was transferred successfully to my 7710 but wouldn't open, it threw a "general error"::.. I restarted my 7710 and then i could see the transferred image..
4. Phone hung once between switchingn profiles.
5. After a series of recordings and playing around with the phone I tried to watch a video on real player and it threw an "out of memory" error. There is a lotta free space on my phone+MMC...

What's your software version? Key in *#0000# to check. I'd like to know if your unit has the same problems as mine. Try modifying the Contacts template, turn on/off and see whether the template has defaulted back to the original. Don't worry, this won't kill your unit or anything. BTW, where are you? I'm in Malaysia.
Looks like the 7710 bug list will continue to grow....
Yah really the bug list will continue to grow.
Do u know how we can assign the ringtones to Groups. I can assign to particular contact but not to Groups.
and i am not able to see any mp3 and other tones which are in my mmc in the profiles .

I am facing the following problem in my Nokia 7710.
1. There is no Idle Screen like other phone as in Series 60. And I cannot see the CLOCK AND DATE on the idle screen on any other Screen except in some. (It is on bottom right corner)
2. You can’t set those MP3 and other Sound Clip, which are in MMC you have to transfer then in Phone Memory.
3. You can’t set the Ring tones for Groups. You have to select each name and then do edit then assign tone on particular name.
4. There is No Night Mode and No Zoom for Video.
Not able to Make complete backup as made in Other phone. Phone only takes important stuff.
Looks like the 7710 has more problems. It all started this afternoon when I discovered that I couldn't connect my Motorola HS810 bluetooth headset. I've been using the headset for about 1 week+ without any problems. Now, apart from not being able to use bluetooth:
1. I can't turn bluetooth on - the unit just goes back to the main menu. When I go back to Control Panel > Bluetooth, it's turned off, even though I just turned it on.
2. I can't send SMSes - when I try to send, the message stays in the Outbox and never gets delivered, no matter what I do.
3. I can't use the Web browser - if I click on it, the menu disappears then reappears. No browser window, nothing. It just can't start.
4. Caller cannot hear me - now if I make a call, the other party cannot hear my voice. I have to turn on the loudspeaker, otherwise the other party can't hear me.
AARRGGHHH!!!! I think I'm gonna sell this and get a 6630 instead.
@kengsim
I assume you have tried a cold boot (remove/re-insert the battery)? BT stability is a problem faced by other devices as well - such as the SE Pxxx range and even the XDA mini (PPC). I have not suffered any real issues with BT - I have used SE HBH-35 & HBH-200 and now Jabra BT800. If a cold boot does not work I am afraid you'll need to try to reformat the c: drive - but don't restore any BT settings (not sure how you'd avoid this though).

Kengsim, I think you better get a new phone. You really have bad luck with 7710 😃 Must be the number. *Hehe*
Good thing the cold boot worked. This phone is really buggy. If I had a choice, I'd never use a Symbian phone...
It has nothing to do with the stability/"bugginess" of Symbian, only with Series 90. UIQ is rock solid for example (and so is S80 in my experience)
I also face this problem even cold booting could not help me.

I have owned a SE P800, P900 & P910 and I can tell you that these units have not been that stable. The P910 is obviously the best, but even the P900 needed a firmware upgrade before it would work properly with the SE HBH-200. But also given that the Nokia 9500 is very stable on BT there is no reason why Nokia should produce the 7710 with less robustness.

And you would call a phone unstable because it doesn't connect to a headset?? :con? IMO the P800/900 are much more stable than any Pocket PC....
i dont know why but i feel like i replied to this thread before. is this thread similar to mobile burn forums thread? yes i just checked it, similar thread exists on mobile burn forums.
Heh, I posted there too, but hardly ever check for replies. 😊

I am Sathya.Happy to post my first statement here.Hey i am also using this device but i dont find any of the problems mentioned by you people here.my bluetooth is perfectly working for hours together..I send atleast 20 to 30 sms a day without any troubles mentioned by u people..dunno wats up with ur phones..really surprised..But when i browse my phone hangs very rarely..but that happens with many PDA's as far as i know..
Hi, my first msg. I really love this phone but.... :icon4: I cant seem to figure out why it freezes on me sometimes. I started just two weeks after I bought the phone, Net explorer stopped working, just going back to the main menu after an empty screen.. and that went to alarm, and other programs. I got it fixed... I was told that the sofware had to be formatted and reinstalled!
It worked ok till three days back, it just went dim and frooze! Had to remove the battery and then it came back to a slow and agonizing life! Music player is giving trouble again., when I try to play a track, it highlites all the songs and says a General error, File not supported ( and all these tracks were playing perfectly before this!),, anybody got any suggestions as to what could be the root of the problem! and does Nokia take resposibility for sofware crashes?? - afterall its an expensive phone!! 😮 Ok.. like to see all the reasons why and also, has anyone else have the same problem??
Cheers :icon2:
I have a GPRS activated connection. I mainly use my cell phone as GPRS modem. I use GPRS to connect to internet by connecting my phone to my laptop through DKU 2 cable bundled. When I connect through my laptop early in the morning everything is ok, speed is fast but when after the phone is used for the day and in the evening I connect it throug my laptop although the modem activated icon is visible on the phone" no connectivity". Modem failed to respond is the message. Then I remove the battery and restart ,everything becomes oK. i am fed up of removing and reinserting the battery again and again. In the modem diagonosis box when I query the modem , sometimes it gets modem info and most of the times it fails. I think the modem in 7710 is buggy. Is there any solution somewhere with somebody. I have tried to reinstall the modem drivers and what not.
I can browse internet on the phone without any problem anytime but not through the laptop.
Note: NOTHING absolutely wrong with my laptop or usb cable or the usb port. I have checked them all.
See in your Desktop there is Optopn for Backup.... do it ones ... your Problem will be Finish within 20 min ... its Auto Scan + any File Remove from system its com back . my New 7710 so many time Hang but now its COOL..
