today was the launching of Pakistans first Wireless local loop service provider GOcdma, www.gocdma.com.pk
AAS, being the only telecommunication forum i know, i posted this here... can anyone please help me understand what WLL is? will i be able to use a mobile handset on it? i saw the website and it does say that u can use a CDMA set of your own so i was wondering, can i use the Nokia 6630? also this network works on CDMA2000 which means 3G and all over the newspapers Qualcomm and other such international partners have congratulated GO cdma on launching its 3G network which definitely means its 3G so can anyone help me with what kind of handsets i can use? any of them symbian? and is WLL good or not.. thank u
WLL in Pakistan
The 6630 is a phone that supports WCDMA networks (and GSM/EGPRS a.k.a. EDGE) and cannot be used in either CDMA or any CDMA2000 networks.
CDMA is not the same thing as WCDMA.
CDMA is a 2nd generation network technology comparable to GSM. WCDMA is a so called 3rd generation network technology (also known as UMTS).
There is a CDMA-world equivalent to that called CDMA2000 (which comes, more or less, in two versions EV-DO and EV-DV where the former has a fixed frequency band used for voice and another for data traffic, and the latter can use the whole bandwidth for both and is more effective in using the network capacity, simply put).
I could be very wrong here, but what this Wireless Local Loop service is, is presumably a wireless service for both phone and internet access, but I think from a fixed location (your home or business residence) without roaming (or limited roaming).
it does provide internet and can be used for limited roaming i agree.. isnt WCDMA and CDMA2000 the same thing? i thought that.. thanks for explaining it though..

Yes. GO CDMA is a Wireless Local Loop service, that, by PTA (Pakistan Telecommunications Authority) regulations, is 'Limited Mobility'. Meaning that the user is physically restricted to move around the GO CDMA enabled device outside his /her user zone. That zone depends on which city (building density) you are talking about. In large urban areas (keeping in mind that its a CDMA 1900 Mhz service), that range might mean 6 - km diameter of zoning. As long as the device is physically within that zone, it will remain active and connected to the world.
Hope this clarifies.
Dear All,
I here to let you all know that Roaming etc. on Wireless CDMA connections depend on Service Provider. As compare to GO CDMA & Diallog, PTCL V-Phone provided Roaming all over Pakistan, just like GSM Mobiles as PTCL laid its CDMA network more over 750 areas to facilitate all of the customers.
But, GO CDMA & Diallog as well as all other GSM Mobile Companies contacted Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to force Pakistan Telecommunication Company Ltd (PTCL) to stop this Roaming all over Pakistan. Due to this reason PTCL have stopped its Roaming and V-Phone is limited to all over district i.e. V-Phone can be moved anywhere within the same city.
I hope Roaming will be open again very soon.
