Hi all,
Can't connect to UMTS network. What I doing wrong? I have listed both UMTS and GSM network when phone scans network, I mark UMTS network but it stays on GSM. (there must be a 3G sign just below signal strenght, no?) I have also a Sonyericsson Z1010 which without any problem connects to UMTS network with sam SIM card.
Sorry for bad English, I'm Croatian 😊

and what operator are we talking about ? network can be configured manualy,or automaticaly... if its set to automatic, than the phone is trying to join the 3G network firstly,if it fails in some reason,or its just not possible, than it will try to join GSM network 😃 and yes, there must be the 3G icon near the signal intensity icon 😃

The operator is the same. I tried both way automatical or manual but with no luck. How I said just before, I connect with no problem with my other phone SE Z1010, with same SIM, same operator. Is there any solution for that, as I work for that operator and I have phone with free download and talk 😊 You understand why I REALLY need to connect to UMTS network 😊
Maybe stupid question, but is there any apps that can force connectivity?

i dont think so,that there is an app like that.... 😃 if you are working for the operator /which you forget to call by name/ than try to ask there, they will know about it more, than someone here... 😃 maybe its a problem of your piece,or caused by firmware,or who knows.... but if you are working for the operator, than you will shortly solve your problem, just ask in the correct place 😉
Just because theres a 3G signal doesent mean that its strong enougth to use. Your phone may also favour the 2G signal if its a lot stronger than the 3G one. The phone uses more pwer when the signal is weak so it makes sence that it wont bother sitting on an extremly low 3G signal.
I pick up Voda 3G at work but have to drive 3 miles before its actually strong enougth to get 1bar.

it looks like, that you are right 😃 there can be a problem with the signal intensity... but if his Z1010 is working properly, there the problem can be is something different 🙄
Caused by the umts network. No country has a full coverage yet! :icon4: That your other phone can contact the network is probably caused by the fact that your Z1010 likes to use more of your batterypower to connect the network. The antenna will be stronger i guess. 😃

I work for VIP if just want to know, but I bought phone in Italy (TIM) unlocked. Operator don't have anything with that, as Z1010 works normaly. Is there solution to update firmware by myself, or do I need to go to Nokia service?

Maybe that's true, as where I live, GSM base station is nearest than the UMTS BS, so phone hooks the better signal network. But I don't want that 😊
I've found where is the problem. As I mentioned before, I work for GSM/UMTS provider here, so I called some guys who works on UMTS platform. The problem is that we have some kind of feature on GSM network which says to mobile phone to stay on 2G network. Nokia have also this feature ON by default, and there is no way to turning it OFF. SonyEricsson does not have this, so Z1010 normaly connect to UMTS network. I hope that this will be fixed in future firmwares. 😞
Ahhh, pitty, as I really like this phone, but even EDGE is not bad at all 😊

The problem is in the network... i dont think, that its caused by firmware, because there are many users of this device in many UMTS countries, and as i know, they dont have problems like this... I dont know for how long is UMTS available in Croatia, but of course its in an early phase and there can be many technical problems.... There are those countries, where the UMTS is much longer, for example Japan,or Austria,if we are talking about Europe... Its normal, that an new technology which is somewhere adopted for the first time is going as well,as they want. There were problems in Vodafones 3G,Orange will launch 3G later, and of course T-Mobile had some problems... but EDGE is good and fast enough as well
😃 is there T-Mobile in Croatia ? /or an operator called diffenetkly,but owned by T-Mobile /Deutsche Telecom/ group ? 😃
Yes, the problem is in the network. Because here UMTS is still in test phase, so they disabled hand-over to 3G network. I was confused because my other phone don't have that information recognition and his switch without problem to 3G network. My company (Vip-net) is owned by Mobilkom Austria Group and the second operator (enemy 😊 ) is owned by Deutch Telekom/T-mobile (T-Com).
Like you've said even EDGE is good enough 😊

as i think, its in etst phase and this fact talks everything about problems with it...
😃 whn will they start the commercial using of UMTS ? In my country its the situation like this:two operators,Orange, and and know the second one will be reabranded to T-Mobile,but no UMTS untill next year .... 🙄
Think it will begin with commercial work next month. Where do you live?
jucca_vtr wrote:Think it will begin with commercial work next month. Where do you live?
in Slovak Republic /if it says something to you/ its a small country /5,6 milion people/ and in May 2004 we joined the EU 😃
I was there, in Bratislav exactly 😊
I hope that we never join to EU. But, we gone little bit OT. Thanks for helping.
Cheers

jucca_vtr wrote:Think it will begin with commercial work next month. Where do you live?
and of course the situation is not so shiny.... no GPRS on pre-paid/only MMS in the network of only one from two operators/,but no GPRS for wap,and net... EDGE is only in the network of Eurotel /shortly rebranded to T-Mobile/ and Orange will launch its EDGE maybe next month... UMTS will be launched in Q1 2006,but maybe only in the capital city, and later maybe in the other big cities...
its sad, because in neigbourhood, there is UMTS for ages 😃 Especially in Austria, where all the 3 operators launched their UMTS network, the first one in 2001,if i remember correctly... In Poland its available, shortly it will be available in Hungary,as we know, that the hungarian T-Mobile signed the contract with Ericsson to UMTS technology... i can only wait, and wait,and....
It must be great to live in a country like Japan, where all modern technologies are adopted in a short time... 😃

yes,its Bratislava.... i dont like that city, because i think that Kosice is moche better /the second largest city/,it was one of the first king cities in the 12century 😃
and what about GPRS on pre-paid ? its available in your country,or only on post-paid ? 🙄
GPRS (EDGE) here is available in both pre or post paid. Now they have free surfig on main portal, but that's nothing special to me as I have phone free of charge 😊
jucca_vtr wrote:GPRS (EDGE) here is available in both pre or post paid. Now they have free surfig on main portal, but that's nothing special to me as I have phone free of charge 😊
omg.... here its very different... all good technologies are for only post-paid clients... but there are more clients in pre-paid... for example Eurotel/shortly T-Mobile/ there are 700 thousand post-paid and 1.2 milion pre-paid,but only MMS availability on it,no GPRS for wap,and net and in Orange network its like this, that here is no MMS on pre-paid... :icon13:
and EDGE is only in Eurotels network for post-paid of course.... :icon13:
That's bad 😞
But I'm sure that will be fixed. It's just need to wait.
jucca_vtr wrote:That's bad 😞

yes, really bad... but iam waiting and waiting... and nothing going to change in the near future... i wrote to both operators in this question, but they sad, that maybe this year will GPRS be available in pre-paid.... oh no...
🙄
Yeah, that's life, always waiting for something. 😊
jucca_vtr wrote:Yeah, that's life, always waiting for something. 😊
yes,it is.... but its "funny/ than an operator with bilions of money is not able to do so simple thing.... i own this device since the half of November, and only one operator take this phone to its phone list last week :icon13:
i boght mine SIM free and i can only use MMS,no wap,no net :icon13:
