Nokia 9500 or P910?

OK, I know you're all gonna say, "chalk and cheese" but well, here goes....

... By Saturday 22nd Jan, I have to EITHER return my Nokia 9500 and replace it with the P910 (it's a 14-day return option from Vodafone) or keep it.

Assuming that some of you have owned P900/910 and moved over to the 9500, can I ask which you would choose? I use Exchange for corporate email. I like the idea that the 9500 has VoIP abilities - is this tried and tested yet? I am quite a hard user of my phones and submanage IT for a company.

I haven't yet explored the potential of the 9500; I've been away for almost a week. I know for sure, I won't get comfortable with the 9500 for weeks, not least because of it's size.

So hence the question, which would YOU choose, SE P910 or Nokia 9500?

If you do a lot of working/writing on the move the 9500 is the only option, can't beat a keyboard. Plus the 9500 has that lovely large screen....

9500, i had a P910 previously. i always have loved a keyboard based system as against a oen based system, its so much faster. its like carrying around a mini laptop whereever you go.
Imagine being able to type an email/sms...work on excell/word/PPT on the go.
Now imagaine typing out an email of say 20-25 lines with handwriting recognition( that too character recognition, not word recognition like , PPC) or the tiny virtual keyboard.
only if a vibrator is important then only you should go in for the P910, otherwise i dont see an advantage.

I have a p910i and got n9500 to test.
Cant decide what i like more. and keep changing between them.
Both have there uses.
Think i would lean to the n9500 only because of the wi-fi and smallbase.
If the pxxx has wi-fi i think it would be my choice.
-Smaller, simpler to carry around esp when you go out clubing etc...
-For some odd reason i can never hear the n9500 ring or alarm even on high with the same rings that are on the p910i
-At this point (and it will change i know) there are many more apps for p910i.

AND i am sure nokia will bring out the n9500i (soonish) that will really rock!

For me the points of difference are:

- The 9500 has WiFi
- The 9500 is not touch screen
- The 9500 has more screen area
- The 9500 version of Opera does not reformat the web page but preserves the layout
- Until the 9500 firmware is upgraded Word & Sheet files can't be opened on PC with XP SP2
- The P910 is smaller and lighter
- The P910 has a unique BT capability, it can link to 3 devices at the same time, the 9500 can't
- The P910 has Handsfree and Headset BT profiles
- The 9500 can't sync Outlook Notes
- The P910 can play MP4 videos
- The P910, without third-party support, has no Profiles
- The Duo Pro is really hot swapable

I would say the 9500 keyboard is very useable for preparing long documents, the P910 is really designed for entry of a short burst of data. The 9500 can be used to create a lot of content and therefore used without a PC, the P910 works better as a device that works with a PC in that it is good for keeping a copy of your essentail data on portable device.

Wow. Thank you ALL for this, I really hadn't expected this response.

I have to be honest, it seems a really tricky choice, especially when I am so used to using the P900.

The enormous downsides of the 9500 is the vibrate and the physical size. I mean how CAN they have left vibrate out? I have NEVER missed so many calls. Unless I've missed something, there's no T9 on the phone side - MAD. Infrequently, I seem to lose my (vodafone) connection for no reason; power-cycle the phone and it's back. It didn't happen with the P900. No stereo is nuts too - business phone or not, exactly how much would that have cost them to implement?

That aside, clearly the phone is eminently capable, I like the wireless and I like the idea of VoIP if, as I mentioned before, it does actually work.

If it's possible to have two sim cards, I could use a small, vibrating phone when I'm not at work and the 9500 when I am. If I were to go THAT far though, I might as well go back to having a separate phone and PDA - exactly what I am trying to avoid.

So I guess I exchange the 9500 for a P910 and then upgrade when the Pxxx becomes available - I suspect it will be a leap forward.

One further thought. I can't think what has happened to Nokia. Only a few years ago, they were the only choice in a small-ish market. But their phones were fairly well-featured and reliable. It seems that now they have regressed. You can't bring out the 9500 and not put vibrate on. It's patently absurd. My partner has a basic Nokia (well, I use his upgrade option 😉) and every time it is recharged, it loses the time and date :con? I mean how basic is that? In short, I think Nokia are losing the plot.

Get the 9300. 😉

Btw, both 9500 and 9300 have stereo sound output. And even if there was a vibrate motor you probably wouldn't notice it anyway because of the size of the unit.

The 9xxx series devices have *never* had a vibrator as Raven points out the size and weight of the device would mean that a vibrator would need to be a sizable unit to shake the phone, then you run the risk of it damaging it when vibrating. To be honest a vibrator is nice but you don't really need it, the phone is plenty loud enough when it's ringing, and even the discrete beep has a fairly high volume.

I had a 910i before I bought the 9500 (which I lost in the pub last week). I didn't get on with the 910 because it was so laborious entering any sort of data other than an odd telephpne number. I'm always making some sort of note or adding an appointment or alarm which I could never do without raising my blood pressure.

The way I see it is the 910 is a phone with PDA features and the 9500 is a PDA with phone features, really it's down to what you need the most.

With regards to using a smaller phone when you go out, i set the 9500 to divert calls to another phone I have which is on a PAYG contract.

Just a quick note, i've read the 9300 is about the same size as a 910 so why can't the 9300 have vibrate?

Well thank you all again for taking the trouble to reply. I don't say that lightly. I am far better informed than I was.

I am relieved that vodafone are delivering my P910 and collecting my 9500 on Tuesday. I can't do without vibrate. Another six calls missed today. HONESTLY. I also can't do without synchronising Notes. What kind of synchronisation is that? My four year old Cassiopeia synchronised Notes. Grrrrr.

Squeek is almost right. Do I want a PDA with phone capabilities or a phone with PDA capabilities? Well, if the 9500 was smaller, it would be a closer call. But honestly, given that I can Putty with the P910, it vibrates, it synchronises properly, it's SMALL(-ish) there is no contest. And me a size queen

And really really truthfully? I WANTED the 9500 to be better. It's not. Well, not for me, anyway.

The 9500 is far from perfect. The P900 was far from perfect (especially after I ran over it with my truck), but at least it fits into my pocket (especially after I ran over it with my truck 😃)

Good luck to you all. Roll on Tuesday and my P910. xxx

Hi guys,

I couldn't choose either, so I use both...

9500 for work and P910 for evening/week-end. My 9500 is fully synchronised with Outlook; in the P910, I just trandsfered my contacts.

The P910 has the best sound (clear and loud) I've heard on a phone and thats what I mostly regret with the 9500. So as we only live once, I decided not to decide and kept both 😉

Great site, congratulations !

i thru away my P900 2 weeks ago to change to 9500. I could not stand it anymore, it was awfull.
the worst was the service-quality, I had to wait 6 weeks for my phone after it refrayed from working after one week of use, just to find out, that the batterie was broken, and that they wouldn't fix it on warranty.

I don't want this to be a "one's better than the other" thread; they are too different.

My P910i arrived today and it set up instantly without fuss (as did my P800 and P900 beforehand). I know I now have the right phone for me. I'm sorry you've had a poor SE experience. A quick glance at either forum might dispel thoughts that one is more or less reliable/well-built than the other.

Just as I'm glad to have the P910i as my phone, I'm sure everyone on this forum is glad to have their 9500. As for the show-off Squeek who has both? Well, just envy really 😃

Or 9300. 😉 I'm never going back to UIQ now. If you, or anyone else, is interested you can read my first impressions of the 9300 here.

Just a tip: MS Word under XPsp2 cannot open 9500 docs indeed, but OpenOffice does. And it is free.

one more vote for the P910. I have a P900 and bought a 9500, I'm glad I didn't sold my P900, the 9500 is not a phone, it's a mini laptop and for me too big for every day use. P900 is still the phone for every day for me and my new 9500, well it's a toy.
the office compatibility on UIQ is much better, esp. for complex powerpoint files, and video playback is smoother on P9. The wifi is cool is on the 9500, but i check my mails in a moving car, on a train, so GPRS is the way to go ...

Trere's a new firmware version for Nokia 9500, v 4.50, that fix this bug.

Regarding P910i, (I had a P800 for more than a year), it looses against 9500 mainly in three BIG issues: no QWERTY keyboard, smaller screen and no Wi-Fi.

And don't forget that P910i is not such a small device anyway.

I think the future will be a communicator using series 90. Right now I think series 80 has the edge over UIQ or PocketPC devices.

Erm, the P910 DOES have a qwerty keyboard, although I have yet to use it in anger and it DOES fit in the pocket of my (oh how SAD that I now have to own up to wearing) 501's 😮
