MP2 (two) player on Sendo X to play SD card DAB radio recordings from TheBug radio

I would like the Sendo X to be able to play MP2 (yes: M P two) recordings from an SD card. Is there an MP2 player I can get or buy for the Sendo X? If not, can anyone advise me on the Sendo hardware so I can make the program myself?
I am a commercial C/C++/Java programmer with some knowledge of ARM (from Acorn PCs)

I live in the UK and I have TheBug DAB Digital Radio (see www.thebug.com) which can do on-the-spot or timed record radio programmes directly onto SD card. The format is MP2 (yes, MP *two*) because this is what DAB radio is broadcast in, MP2.

I would like to take the SD card containing the MP2 radio recording and put it in my Sendo X and listen to it.

To illustrate the point, here's a scenario about timeshifting, radio equivalent of Sky+:
There are some late night/early morning great specialist music shows on Radio 1, 1Xtra, XFM etc. etc. (insert your favourite radio statio here!) and loads of intellectual discussion on Radio 4. But I am either out or working while these are on. So I record them. Would be great if I could listen to them on my Sendo X during the commute to work (when I have nothing else better to do!)

So is there a program for the Sendo X that can player MP2 files from the SD card?
If not can anyone give me datasheets/advice on making a program? I have the skills. I have tried Sendo but have had no response back yet.

I guess that the reason that TheBug does not record and convert MP2 to MP3 format (playable by the Sendo X) is that this would require extra processing power which would increase the cost of manufacturing.

This may not be what you want - but there are MP2 to MP3 converters out there. I've used dbPowerAmp in the past but going back to it I seems to require a license for MP3 output - $14!

No dB PowerAmp is free unless you download and install the Powerpack...

I do not want a PC based solution. I want to be able to take the SD card out of TheBug and put it into the Sendo X without an intermediate step. I've been sat in front of a computer all day - I hardly want to do it when I get home: go through the tedious PC boot up ceremony, "Windows XP"..."Welcome"...La-De-Dah. But thanks anyway for the PC based solution.

Just think of the marketing synergy between the makers of TheBug (Pure Digital/Imagination Technologies) and Sendo that a Sendo X MP2 player could generate. Sales of both products could benefit.

Can you post a link to an mp2 file recorded from "TheBug" radio (or PM me it) for further investigation.

3rd time lucky (file was too large, so have removed one of the .mp2 files inside the zip) (what am i doing wrong?!), steps to attach a zip file to this forum
1. Im on Reply to Thread page, typing this
2. Under Additional Options, Attach Files/Manage Attachments <-- click this
3. Pop up window, Manage Attachments appears. Click Browse to browse to file. Done that. File is in 'File to upload' field
4. Click Upload button
5. File appears under current attachments
6. Close window, pop up Manage Attachments disappears
7. Click Submit on Reply to Thread page

I reckon it should be possible to make an MP2 program for the Sendo X, if it can already play stereo MP3s. Just need to know about the hardware/software apis, symbian apis and how to use the on board ARM co-processor and custom DSP co-processor.

Anyone know of an MP2 (yes MP two) player for Symbian 'phones?
See my reason for asking below.

If there isn't one. Then I'll write one myself. Just thought I'd ask before I re-invent the wheel!

Cheers. Rob.

PS this should be possible to do without specific knowledge of the Sendo X - I had a telephone discussion with one of the Sendo directors and that's what he said. Just need knowledge of Symbian OS - which is readily available.

But again, I don't want to do this if there is already a player out there for Symbian phones.

But if there isn't then it will also look good on my CV if I write one.

Sadly, Sendo have gone into administration. Did you not know? See other threads.

Sorry, I see this thread started back in January!

I'm going ahead and writing my own MP2 player, based around the ogg play - I'm just going to rip out the ogg codec and replace with an MP2 codec. C/C++ code for MP2 codec are available via http://www.mpeg.org/MPEG/audio.html#audio-softwares

I've talked to the oggplay authors and they are very helpful:

http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?thread_id=1347733&forum_id=294908

My MP2 player will also be opensource.

I'll keep you all updated.

Recording 1Xtra, Radio1, Kiss 100 etc specialist music shows onto SD card in my Bug Radio (http://www.thebug.com) and then listening to them with the SD card in my Sendo X mobile in the car, gym or out running has become one step closer!!!

I am just as frustrated as you, trying to find an mp2 player to play BUG recordings. Unless you spend 300 on an in car recorder or 150 on a Perstel DR301 I can't find much else. This type of player does not need much, volume, play/pause/fast forward and maybe a memory of where it last stopped. No need of a funky display, if you are radio recordings. I would be interested to know how you get on. Jh.

I would too, otherwise I have to add mp2 support to the list of things that people want us to add to OggPlay.

While you're at it, can you add MP3 support as well? 😃

I haven't forgot about doing this.

Sadly, I dropped my Sendo X and get no reception - see my other thread.

http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/forum//forum/thread/41235/
"Dropped, now no reception. How to fix?"

It will still switch on, and I suppose I could still develop the MP2 player for it. But I think I would rather sooner get the reception fixed before I start writing the player. Priorities. Hurts me to not be able to use it as a phone. Also, if I leave it too late then repairs may not be available.

Mind you, the Nokia 3250 looks good - it uses a microSD - so would have to get a microSD to SD adapter to go in TheBug radio. Pure Digital, TheBug makers, say that microSD will work with an adapter.

Alternatively there's the T-Mobile MDA which is a bit bigger (but no bigger than an iPod) that takes a full size SD card and has Windows Mobile and therefore Media Player.

www.t-mobile.co.uk/webnwalk/

Would have thought that Media Player for mobile already has MP2 support built in given that the desktop version does but this may not be the case as it's a different program after all.

But if did play MP2 then I would be tempted but I wouldn't have the fun of writing one myself and enhancing my CV, sense of achievement, but less time down the gym while doing it. 😊

Trouble with the MDA is that it's tied and branded to T-Mobile. Would be nice to have a generic branded one that I could use on my favourite network and also 3G. On GPRS, the MDA is not too fast at downloading pages but I think that might be something to do with how good their servers are. It's also an 18 month contract, however 40Mb is bundled free each month + any network calls. T-Mobile have often been innovative and existing with pricing plans but they need to go further and offer shorter contracts and 3G access for it to really take off. The fixed line broadband market is enjoying high speed capacity and lots of choices of pricing plans - would love to see the same happen for mobile. Well appointed gadget is the MDA though, with SDIO option for WiFi and bluetooth built in.

The MDA range (also available on Orange and O2 i think under other names) are manufactured by HTC in asia and available SIM free from i-mate. You can buy them from http://www.expansys.com. In general, expansys is an excellent place to get any SIM free phone including the latest smartphones. They have just redesigned their web site though and the new version is terribly bad, making browsing through all their phones and finding a particualr phone almost impossible (unless i've missed some settings hidden somewhere on the web site). What you are after is the i-mate JAM here: http://www.expansys.com/product.asp?code=I-MATE_JAM

There will probably be new models with 3G released soon.

On the symbian front, the new SE P990 (3G and wifi) or the new Nokia E-series look rather nice too.

I'll be writing this software for the Nokia N80, now that it has mini-SD - I can adapt a mini SD to work in my TheBug radio with an adapter - TheBug makers say this is possible and it works.

i've just got a a new evoke 3 which can record onto SD card, got a micro SD and adapter hoping to listen to shows i recorded on a samsung d900. doesn't look like this will be possible though. Any ideas on what to do? no chance of me programming something for it and don't want to have to convert each file before i play it. also are there any sd card players that will play mp2? thanks

This software will do it

http://coreplayer.com/

Works perfectly on my Nokia N95 and Nokia 5500

Also available for the Sendo X - I've not tested it on mine though - it would mean another license which isnt worth it.
