Side speaker button

Is it just me or is the side-mounted speaker button totally useless?

You can hold it down to prompt a voice dial. Great. Why not just assign a one-press shortcut?

You can turn on the speakerphone when in a call. Fantastic. The right softkey does the same thing.

What I'd really like it to do is start recording the conversation when in a call. On my old Sony Ericsson T610, I assigned the recorder to the left press of the joystick, so I could start recording with just one keypress. Would be nice to have the same thing with the 6630, and the speaker button seems the most logical choice for it.

Any way of doing this?

Yes, start the recorder during a conversation and press record.

There must be a way or a 3rd party app that uses the side button for recording...

The side button is for the push-to-talk feature. But the application for it isn't installed when you buy the phone. You have to download it from your push-to-talk operator

The side button is primaraly for the Voice Activated Dialing and Commands hence why it has has the Voice Activation logo printed on it. No dount programs will be available though that will allow you to take advantage of this button. The one you mentioned is just one of them.
