Quickoffice Premier 3 now available for UIQ

13 replies · 14,326 views · Started 20 January 2005

A new version of the popular and award winning Quickoffice Premier is now available. Quickoffice allows for the viewing and editing of Word, Excel and Powerpoint files. There is improved round trip (the ability to preserve file structure and formatting between the PC and phone) support in the new version since the new version edits the native files directly rather than converting then editing. Other new features include the consolidation of the three suite elements into a single program, a redeisgned user interface, table support in Quickword, more editing features in Quickpoint and improved file handling operations.

Author's Description:

The award winning Quickoffice Premier 3.0 is completely new with hundreds of improvements and remains the best selling mobile office suite for Sony Ericsson and Motorola Symbian UIQ handsets. View, edit & create Microsoft Word documents, Excel spreadsheets and PowerPoint presentations anytime, anywhere on your UIQ smartphone. Quickoffice Premier is compatible with UIQ phones built-in T9 predictive text input software, on-screen keyboards, and SE Jot which dramatically reduce the time it takes to enter text and make editing a snap. New Quickoffice Premier 3.0 is completely localized into English, Italian, German, French and Spanish.

Quickoffice Premier makes it possible to access and edit your "mission critical" Microsoft Office files on any Symbian UIQ smartphone! With Quickoffice Premier, you can create new, or access your existing, contracts, agreements, business plans, sales presentations, financial reports, and all your other Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and text files from e-mail attachments, SD/MMC memory cards or MMS messages. Documents opened on your UIQ smartphone display all the original formatting including color, bolding, italics, varying font sizes, compatible spreadsheet formulas, presentation graphics and more. AND, these same elements are preserved even after youve made edits and changes to the documents so that when you, or a colleague, reopen the edited document on a desktop PC, the document looks like it was modified on a PC. All the elements of the original document are combined with the edits made on your UIQ phone, while you were in a coffee shop or airline terminal, to create a final document that you can send back to your business colleague, client, friend, or your own PC for further editing or viewing. No other mobile office suite can offer you the power and functionality available in new Quickoffice Premier 3.0. (See the example at the bottom of the page)

Easy to use Quickoffice Premier 3.0 also includes huge advancements in Quickword and significantly improves your ability to manage all your Microsoft Office files on your UIQ handset. Quickpoint now adds the ability to edit slide text, edit speaking notes, and insert/delete slides.

This version 3 works a whole lot better than the last one. Well done to the developers.

Though round-tripping desktop documents still loses a lot of info. Pictures, headers and footers, and structure - all this gets lost, which may annoy the original author. This should be mentioned more in the marketing 8-)

Still, Version 3 is a good step forward, more power to their elbow.

Very well, only a couple of seconds to bring up a slide view. Much, much better than before!

Can you tweak our review? Or maybe we should start from scratch?

Version 3 supports very very good round-tripping of documents from Quickword and Quickpoint. Quicksheet continues to be a bit lossy, but the other two apps are rock solid. Images, headers, footers, and all of the document structure are most definitely maintained when you save it.

Sorry to disagree, but I put my standard test Word document over to the P900 running Qo3, made a couple of changes, resaved and then re-opened on the desktop, and images, footers, etc. were missing.

YMMV, I guess...

It still doesn't support Symbian Word/Sheet native format so it's not an option for me. Can't believe they still omit it since a filter for this format is so simple to implement.

Eh? Symbian Word or Sheet don't even exist for UIQ, so why would it be easy to implement a filter?

I agree that UIQ's decision not to bother porting across Word and Sheet was crazy, a few years ago (don't even get me started on Nokia's decision not to even bother porting Agenda/Calendar to their Series 60... [mutter, mutter]), but full marks to the Qo people for putting in the time to create something pretty decent.

Steve,

UIQ didn;t implement the applciation as such, but my understanding is that the underlying file structures are still available. In other words QuickOffice would be able to read a UNICODE Word or Sheet filem from a 9500 or 9300 for example.

slitchfield wrote:Eh? Symbian Word or Sheet don't even exist for UIQ, so why would it be easy to implement a filter?

For three simple reasons. (1) The formats themselves take up much less memory. Even though the applications do not exist for UIQ (yet?), you can still support the formats. (2) File exchange between UIQ machines, S80/S90 machines & Psions and (3) Microsoft-proof - historically they have radically changed their formats every 5 years or so just to upset competitors. And after any such change, they have kept their formats secret as long as practically and/or legally and/or commercially possible. Hence overreliance on MS formats is not a good strategy.

That's also my understanding.

And converting between native Unicode Symbian Word/Sheet format and Psion Word/Sheet format is quite easy and can be done on application level. In fact I'm almost finished with such converter in OPL for Symbian Word, which I hope to publish sometime later. Sheet will follow when I have time.

Ewan wrote:Sheet and Word Psion<-> Symbian? Sign me up for that Alpha Test martin!!!

Certainly will, Ewan.

Though I think I was slightly overstating things earlier...it's not *that* easy...but not insurmountable either.
