is it as good as,say an xda2? im still undecided between getting a 9500 (with all the nasty comments ive been reading on this board 😃 ) or if i should get an HP6300
how is the 9500 with mp3 and vids?
As you can read in the 9500 review on this site, multimedia is not the strongest point of the 9500. The HP6300 does perform better in that area (although it's not really the best either, because of the processor).
However, I have heard a lot about software problems of the 6300 (resetting a few times a day etc.)
Videos, playback is fine, far better than the 9210 and minimal skipping. MP3 playback is perfect the 9500 and stereo headset have replaced my minidisc walkman now. Perfect for my use apart from my only complaint being I have to open the pda as the only controls are on the inside for it. Only thing to bear in mind though is that with video the playback window will be a tad smaller than you will get on a PocketPC, as although it's got a higher resolution than the PocketPCs the PocketPCs tend to have a larger physical screen.
I will say though that if my intentions were to watch divx etc I'd save money and buy an Archos portable video/mp3 player as the quality is better than either a PocketPC or Nokia communicator can achieve. If data entry is a concern then the Nokia wins over PocketPC.
You can hardly call videoplayback of the 9500 any good! At least, the Real Player just sucks. There is a lot of skipping. Maybe SmartMovie is better, but from what I heard, it's not perfect either.
@nickster
In general AACs sound better than MP3 sampled at 128kbps on the 9500. Also in terms of sound reproduction, the 9500 is very good at the low/bass frequencies, much better than the SE P910. The main issue with Nokia devices is that it is not esy to use good quality headphones (eg Sony EX71SLBs) - you need to use an adaptor from Skullcandy.
Headphone adaptor I don't know about but I'd just use a similar method to the one I used back here: http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/forum//forum/thread/1782/ to attach my own headphones. Saying that it should be child's play to adapt a Nokia stereo headset which is a few quid on ebay with a couple of pence jack socket to allow headphones in.
As for the realplayer comment, I don't know what you were playing but realplayer playback is perfect for me. I've got a fair amount of films in .rm format from back in the day before divx encoding took off, and they play fine on my 9500.
As I said though, MP3s and audio playback are fine on a device like this, you don't need a lot of power to play music, for video I'd definately get a dedicated unit like the Archos as you get a good quality large screen and good playback of many formats.
will the mp3 keep playing with the phone closed?
switchblade, where can i find those .rm films?

Yes.
The files I'm trying to play are in .3gp which won't work all that well

I simply recorded videos onto my computer using Real Producer to encode them as at the time Real gave seemingly the best trade off between quality and size.
@Delta737, have you tried to use the Nokia Media Convertor 2.0, which is free from the Nokia web site? Gives okay 3GP, not as good as PVAuthor (when using this remember to rip as VCD quality from the ripper app and use AAC mono encoding in PVAuthor)
No haven't tried it. I can't download it, because I'm not a member of Forum Nokia...
Forum Nokia membership is free, it's worth signing up for some of the stuff you can get from it.
