Hi, I have just taken delivery of a Motorola A1000 and want to be able to run some GPS software on it.
I understand that I need to buy the hardware too and want this in the form of bluetooth.
Can anyone tell me which model/package will work on the A1000? Ie Tomtom, Route 66, etc?
Many thanks - Mark
No TomTom, no Route 66. Only GPS software available is Wayfinder
I'd like to add to what Delta737 said...

The A1000 has a built in GPS receiver. There's no absolute need to buy an external antenna (or complete external GPS), but it will significantly lower the time it takes to find a signal and lock on to it.
Apart from Wayfinder, there are also a few lowbudget alternatives, such as nhGPS, MapViewGPS and the free Find the place (which doesn't use maps).
Thanks for your replies. However, you've led me to another question;
Whilst I don't mind paying for the 'map' software, I don't want to be charged for then accessing the GPS system. Whould I be righ in thinking that I would need to somehow block/disable the GPRS on the phone? And if so, how would I do this?
Many thanks - mark

With the GPS programs I've tried, I've always been given the question if I want to "connect to the network" when starting them up. Simply selecting "No" will make the application use the phone's internal GPS receiver without out the help of GPRS. If you're really paranoid, you can disable the phone when using it as a GPS by telling it to connect to a new network and then simply "Cancel" it while it's searching. But then you won't be able to make or receive any phone calls either, though 😉
I only seem to have the option of connecting or disconnecting the GPRS. Where is the GPS itself? From what I understand though, you do not get charged for using the GPRS anyway. But if anyone could make clear where the GPS stuff is it would be much appreciated!
Cheers
Matt

In what application?
Where is the GPS itself?
It's built in to the handset. If you look at the back of your phone you will find a small rubber cover. Underneath that there are two connectors. Those can be used to connect an external antenna to get better reception for the built in GPS.

That would depend on your subscription. I have Three (Hi3G), and at least in Sweden, they change 10SEK per megabyte transfered over GPRS.
What experiance have people had using this software on the 3 network in the UK? I'm thinking of getting an A1000 and an avid hill walker, so the gps could be a usefull back at times.
For this I wouldn't really need a map, just my postion, but preferably in the Ordance Survey format. Is this possible?
