New 9500 Owner - Newbie Problems...

Hi Everyone -

First post here - thank you for having me, and for the help you may offer! 😊

I hope these problems don't seem too strange.

1. I was able to set up WiFi with my Airport at home. The problem is that every time I go to "Messeging" to access email, the 9500 asks for my WEP Key. It seems to remember it for the web, but not for email. I can enter it once, look at all my email accounts, but then if I exit and come back to "Messaging" the phone prompts me to reenter the code every time. What can I do about this?

2. Is there a way to switch off WiFi? When I'm at a Starbucks, I want to use the EDGE data stream to get on the web, and to pick up email. Same problem as above - the phone wants to default to WiFi, and since I don't have a Hotspot account I'm kind of sunk. I was able to get GPRS to work for the web, but E-Mail still triggered the WLAN screen. There is a "Change Connection" menu option - but it is greyed out and I can't use it. It would be great if I could just disable WiFi and use the "always on" GPRS to deal with email and internet.

I'm sure I'll have more problems as I get used to the device - but any and all assistance is appreciated!

Thanks!

Hi there. As for your first problem. Try to check the settings of your e-mail account. Under internet access, it should be set to the name of your wi-fi at home, not the "Easy WLAN" of the "Ad-hoc Easy WLAN". If you say your commy remembers it for the web, i believe you have already saved a setting for your wi-fi at home in your commy. You should use that internet access also for your e-mail.
As for you number 2 problem, there is an e-mail setting under "roaming" that you can define your second access (where you can set your GPRS account), third access, and fourth access. So if you placed your wi-fi as the default access for e-mail and it cannot access that wi-fi, then it will automatically switch to your second access...if it cannot connect to your second access, it will again automatically go to your third access.

Don't forget to switch "change connection automatically" to yes.

Hope this will help you. 😃

Thank you, Womb R@ider -

Unfortunately, I still seem to be having some problems...

When I go to retrieve an email from one of my accounts, I am given the name of my home Wifi account. I select it, and I'm prompted for the WEP key. I enter it, and then, the screen reads "Connecting via Easy WLAN." It seems to work fine as long as I don't exit out of "Messenging," leaving it open on the desktop. If I do exit out, I have to repeat the WEP key each time.

I haven't been able to try your suggestion of using a 2nd, 3rd and 4th choice, as I have to get out of WiFi range to do it. I can't figure out how to simply tell the phone NOT to look for Wifi.

One concern I have is this - say I'm at Starbucks, and I want to download my email. I don't want to pay for a T-Mobile "Hotspot" account, so I'll want to download with GPRS. How do I tell the 9500 that I don't want the available Wifi, but that it should use the GPRS instead? I'm concerned it will simply try to access the wifi until I exit the program.

What's worse, is that once I exit, I'll have to reenter my WEP key when I get home again...

It's strange that I can't just select the way I'd like to log on - WiFi, GPRS - whatever...it seems that I can do that in the "Web" portion of the phone, but not "Messaging." Am I missing something?

Also - this is an unlocked phone that I'm using with AT&T. Is it possible that there are settings that need to be sent to the phone to get it to function correctly? I recall when I had an unlocked Sony P800, also with AT&T, that I had to go to a site and get some settings sent to the phone in an SMS. Do you think this might be the case here?

Thanks again!

I've fix your second problem. Use an IP passtrough as default for email accounts. Then set wifi and GPRS/edge as roamin (Don't care about orders). When messaging app tries connecting it won't find IP Passtrough aviable then lets you choose another connection type with a window.
This should work.
Bye!

Thanks, Playkiller -

How do I set that IP passthrough?

Thanks a lot!

(Told you I was a newbie!)

Hi!

Call off the guards, it's been figured out. 😊

I called Nokia this afternoon, and after getting a bit of a lecture about trying to set up a European phone for use in the USA, I was told that the setting I needed was actually off screen.

I was told to go Tools>Control Panel>Messaging. I picked the account I wanted to change (I have 6) and hit "Select."

This is where I screwed up. The tab that determines what the phone looks for to download email is OFFSCREEN. It is below the information displayed on the phone. Being a new user, I assumed that there would be an arrow or something if there was more information - but there isn't on the 9500. Just the thin scroll bar on the right - and I just didn't see it.

When I scrolled down, I saw an an option for "Internet Access". This was set as a default to Wifi, (WLAN) and I simply changed it to Internet-GPRS. It now works fine. Whew!

He also told me that the reason the phone wouldn't remember my WEP key is because it's semi-incompatible with the Apple Airport. Apparently, it was the Airport that was kicking out the phone, not vice-versa.

Thank you all for your help! I may be back with more questions in the coming days.

Cheers!

Maybe if they'd release the phone in the US we wouldn't have had to buy the world phone version. I'd bet there's a couple thousand of us using the phone over here, I love it, I'm glad I didn't wait.

That is really good to know! I was thinking about buying the Airport, I'll look at the Netgear, SMC and 3Com products instead. You've saved me some aggravation, thanks!

Hey Maureen -

Regarding the Airport - it works okay on the "Web" function. It's slower than I thought it would be, but faster than GPRS.

Apparently the security level on the Airport is higher than the phone's. So it keeps asking for the secure key.

Maybe a call or an email to Nokia would get a recommendation of the ideal wifi station?

Cheers!
