You can now access the site through
http://www.allaboutsymbian.com
and

Site logo needs to change to reflect this. Will be done in about 24 hours (give the DNSchanges time to go through).
So advance warning / news for all the helpful people! 😊
Given the fact that the 7650 et all run ER6.1, and the P800 (and the 9310?) are going to be running ER7, the site name was getting a bit out of date. Even Symbian are doing their best to loose the ERx format and go to Symbian OS.
I think this is a good move.
This is going to take a while to change everything 😊 But like Ewan said it is the way to go 😉
The change is good as it takes away the impression that the site focuses just on the 92x0!
Bah means I have to update bookmarks 😉
After the changes have taken affect with ppl still be able to access the site through www.allabouter6.com ?
Absolutely. All I've done is purchased the domain names. For the time being they will redirect to allabouter6.com. I may well move sever at Christmas and then the url would chnage, although the old one would then forward. Clear!? 😊
Crystal clear 😃
I was considering starting my own web server to save on costs for my site, but looking into it further I'm not sure if this will be a viable option as it is a buisness site so downtime = money :-?
And there is no way I could maintain my own server as much as much a company/person that does it for a living.
I may still go ahead with it, i'm just weighing up the pro's and con's at the moment.
With DSL/Cable being so cheap now it doesn't cost the earth to run your own server (Plus i'd do it through the buisness) 😃
I've built and run a webserver, it's pretty easy. Just make sure that the components you use are reliable and covered by a decent warranty (which usually means they shouldn't fail). Remember not to run one on windoze (goes without saying really). Once it's going it should carry on going up until a powercut (unless you pay for UPS) or your ISP goes down.
Few things to check are that your ISP allow you to run a webserver (quite a few block port 80 as such servers suck bandwidth), remember that if a lot of people look at it at once (and its more than simple gfx & text) then the internet connection is gonna seem damn slow.
The main reasons I'm not still serving are my non-static IP address, and 512k connection. I'm too cheap to upgrade.
EDIT: Bah - shouldn't try and do two posst at once.
I think you've got the wrong topic Rafe, you want Community Waffle.
We were discussing Web Servers, like the news story. I'm not sure what to think about it until I get my hands on one :-?
Anyway,
How much do you think I'll need as a rough figure for a stable/reliable server?
Is there any particular company you would reccomend for the server, connection, router, firewall ect ect..
I'm going to seriously consider it over the next few weeks whilst i've got some time off.
I've done this more then once 😊
To start off, get a pc, something like http://www.mini-itx.com/store/default.asp?c=2
With 400Mhz and about 128mb ram you'll have a very good and powerfull server.
Non static IP problems: www.dyndns.com
They will give you a host to link to you dynamic IP for free.
mydomain.com is a free service to handle your domain/subdomain and email forwarding.
Os:
Slackware 8.x rulez for server software.
Got mysql/php/ftp/ssh/firewall/router all installed and not to hard to config.
Only problem, the bandwidth, a adsl account is good, but If you have a few visits to much your site will start to imitate a turtle 😛
Cheers Dazler, very helpful 😃
As for the bandwidth i'd rather have more than just enough, but I can't justify a T1 connection on the company expenses 😃
Guess I need to do a bit more homework :-?
You are welcome and plz feel free to contact me @ [email protected] if you need some help.
Rafe, i can access the forum via Gov network. It really took quite few days for the resetting of the stupid gov proxy to release all old cache!
The performance is so much faster than before. 😃
