Ever wondered how Steve Litchfield knows where he's going? Well now the secret is out. He's been reviewing Route 66's Mobile Britian, the GPS included navigation software for Series 60. Could it be as good as an Army Officer with a Map? Or is it genuinly useful?
Take a Left Here, And Straight On To Route 66
I have been borrowing my friends version of this for a little while and have tested it on 200mile plus journeys.
Although when using roads that I know, the choices it makes seem strange, as it sent me through a city centre a few miles away to get to a motorway, when it was quicker to join a nearby motorway and then use it to get to another.
I have to say though that the guidance to the destination was spot on.
I see that you also found searching for locations a bit clumsy, as did I, but I found postcode input and then scrolling down to road name or POI faster.
I can't find away to add your own POI's, speed camera's, historical buildings etc, Tomtom I see allows this. I would find this option very useful on my long drives so that I could pop along to some interesting locations whilst away on business. (too late for me with speed cameras though as I can't afford any more points so I travel slow enough anyway LOL )
The way the map lags a little bit, I think although I am to busy watching the road, but the voice intructions are spot on and very audible on my 6600. I find it very strange that the audio is not routed through my wired handsfree kit so I have to have my stereo lower 😞 though a multiple bluetooth connection through a BT car kit with phone muting stereo would be ideal.
I would like to be able to priorities for road types, as I have been able to on my psion in the past, not just the speeds (I have also noted that the ETA is accurate and also updates itself if you stop for a while or go slower than expected)
I am waiting for your review on Tomtom before I decide which one to buy, asI don't know anyone to borrow it off, though the ability to load your own POI's and have warning's for them as you get near is appealing (iron age earthworks are always easy to spot 😊 )
The plus side for Route66 against Tomtom is that there are many many more purchase options, for if I have to go aboroad or decide to purshase my own GPS unit.
