The 3gp format seems to be a subset of MP4. Does that mean you can simply change the file extension of a 3gp to a MP4. As this then works with a MP4 reader?

It's slightly more complicated. 3gp is a wrapper format that supports different video encodings, one of which is MP4 at specific size/bitrates.
At least that's how I understand the situation
