To solve the problem simply download iTunes, import your song(s) and convert it to .aac. No soundquality loss :icon4: It is all done within a second.

The vodafone guy was talking about updating the firmware. This basically flatterns your phone of all software and starts again (possibly with an updated version).

But I'm not sure many nokia people would do this as it would then make the guarentee void on your phone.

But if you do decide to go ahead and actually find someone to do it, make sure that all you stuff is backed up personally and then afterwards you'll need to ring vodafone to get them to sms you the vodafine live settings for .3g and mms

sorry, didn't actually answer you question!

I've never updated the firmware myself. But I've heard you need special equipment to do it, which is expensive. then of course the latest firmware.

hi, firstly firmware is only updated at nokia service/care centres & not sure if they would update a vodaone one :con? it takes a couple of hrs to do so you may need to leave the phone with them for a day 😃

before getting any firmware updates make sure yr phone is completly backed up to yr memory card. 😃

if you are lucky to get it done you wont need vodafone to send sms/mms settings etc to you as the 6630 detects these itself that is one neat feature of the phone. 😃
I also have a vodafone 6630 so will be looking to do the same thing. 😃

I think it was mentioned somewhere that the only way to get a generic firmware flashed onto a branded phone (Vodafone, Orange, T-Mobile) was to un-lock the phone first. I don't think it's possible to flash a Vodafone Nokia 6630 with a generic firmware s/w (to remove the Vodafone restrictrions - MP3 ringtones etc). The handset has to be un-locked first.

Can anyone confirm this please?

Hey,

You shouldn't need to unlock the phone first to have a different firmware installed.
All the unlocking does is allow the phone to register other sims that are not VodaFone.
Remember the firmware is essentially the operating system of the phone. As in a PC remove it and install another & it still works, it's just different.

The problem you do have with getting the generic firmware is that some Nokia Service Centres will not flash a phone with any other firmware than what is already on it. By that I mean if the phone is an Orange phone for instance, then an Orange firmware is all that will be written to it.
Worth remembering.

Hi,

Regarding getting the generic firmware on a branded phone, the nokia centre in Madrid ( anyone who wants the address just ask) said and did flash a vodafone phone. I asked vodafone before doing this if this would affect the warranty and they assured me that it wouldnt. They said that if anything went wrong they(vodafone) will flash the phone back to the branded state or if its a hardware issue, fix it or replace it. This I got them to say very clearly. So your guarantee is not affected by this flash in any way.

It has to be unlocked before Nokia can flash the phone. The firmware and the locking are 2 separate technical elements.

At the moment, as has been said before, Vodafone have not got a solution for unlocking. For me, they gave me an unlocked phone, after a long campaign of complaining (and a bit of flirting with some girl that works in Vodafone)!
But the cheeky fuckers insisted on flashing it before they gave it to me. I didnt want them to do that of course so it was then that I got them to assure me that flashing to generic software would not affect warranty.

They gave me 130 euro back too for the trauma they caused... Still hate them though.

Hope this helps.

UP !
I have a TIM (Italian) mobile... Can I ask a nokia service center to flash it with a generic firmware ? It is Sim Free and I'm using it in France... So I don't care of Italian restrictions !!!
Thanks a lot 😊

Hi, it is possible to upgrade the firmware from vodaphone to generic. My wife had hers done recently at a nokia service centre, they said "unfortunately we dont have the vodafone software so we had to put generic software on." Shame eh!! lol. Well it works just fine and will now allow mp3's to be set as ringtones and acts just like a generic phone, not sure if it accepts other sim cards though as we have not tested it, if it does i will post on here. Software version is now 3.45.113
