Anti-aliased text?

Having played around with a few new Microsoft Windows Smartphone devices, I noticed that the text in the OS is anti-aliased, in the same way that it is on newer Pocket PC's and Windows XP machines with font smoothing turned on (sub-pixel alignment).

I was wondering, would it be possible to achieve this on a Series 60 device? I understand that some major coding would be necessary, and an app/layer would have to run in the background, but for me this would be an acceptable tradeoff for the increase in usability and ergonomics that anti-aliased fonts would give.

Any info would be much appreciated, even if it explains how such a thing is completely impossible.

Thanks, but I'm fully aware of how sub-pixel alignment works.

What I am interested in is whether it's possible to enable such text anti-aliasing on existing Series 60 devices with a 3rd party app/layer.

Here's hoping it's introduced as standard with the new UI that's rumoured to appear with the Nokia 6680.
