Im running a orange chip in a o2 handset and sometimes the phone takes ages to pick up any network, and sometimes its picked up orange then drop reception and displays 3G (which the chip isnt).
Only seen it do this a few times but i was wondering if the phone was automatically set to switch somehow or something which is making it search all the time?
Sounds like the phone is constantly trying to auto-switch to a 3G signal whenever it finds one. This will happen regardless of what type of SIM you've got. It's a pain in the arse; leaves you without reception while it's switching over and absolutely kills the battery. Some people get less than a day's battery life with 3G turned on.
To switch 3G off permanently and stop this happening (and save a whole load of battery life in the process), go to Menu>Tools>Settings>Network>Network Mode, and select "GSM". Once you restart the phone, it will no longer attempt to switch over to a 3G signal.
If your phone has an older firmware version without this menu option, you can achieve the same thing using Nokia Field Test software. Have a look here for a guide: http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/forum//forum/thread/33130/
Hope that helps.
