Pocket Media Assistant, PMA400

So im leaving the world of symbian by selling my 6600 and buying a little motorola v500.

But i am buying an Archos Pocket Media Assistant PMA400, which looks brilliant.

It has a linux os and 30 gig harddrive, plays movies & music, has internet access via WiFi, or Ethernet Cable which suits me as i have a wireless router. http://www.archos.com/products/overview/pma_400.html Check the link for more information. Its not out in the UK yet, the release date is 04/03/05 but i read that it will be delayed until april.

Well at least it gives me a chance to save some money up, im just so excied lol! What do you all think does it tempt you to have a standard phone and a brilliant gadget?

i ahve it, and i love mine. It has PDa functionality and plays games, and plays MP3s, and divx movies, and displays pictures. It also has Wi-Fi and the Opera browser is pretty good. But most importantly it is a PDA with a 30 Gig hard drive. Or a MP3 player that is also a PDA. Also you can hook it up to your cable box or satelite box and record TV directly into it, no computer needed for that. Or hook a camera directly into it and turn the unit into a camcorder. I did that, it was soo cool. It has USB host too. So you can plug a usb keyboard or other things into it. And you can plu yoru digital camera into it and download pictures directly into it.

It does so much, i am sure i am forgetting a lot it can do. I love ti so far and I have had it a month.

Keith,

Thanks for the info.

I'm considering getting the PMA400. At the moment I have a Psion S5Mx and the AV340.

Is the PMA400 multi-tasking? E.g., can you listen to music AND look at photos on it at the same time. The AV340 is NOT. I.e., the embedded applications that display photos and that play music cannot both be running at the same time.

What camera have you used with it? Does Archos supply it - the one I use with the AV340 is their own, which attaches to the mini-Centronics port of the LHS of the unit.

Yours,
Norman

The PMA 400 can multitask (pictures and mp3's). I have had mine for a few days now and I'm not really impressed.

The thing locks up constantly, mp3 playback is buggy (songs occasionaly play at 4x speed), the photo viewer is slow, I can't even find the opera application, and the battery power seems lacking. There does not appear to be a way to turn off the WiFi to save power. The time is never kept properly and you can only choose between 4 time zones. It keeps trying to load a CF card app (even after I disable it) even though it has no CF slot. The USB interface does not work as advertised... I have to turn mine completly off, plug it in, and then boot it to see it on my laptop. The manual suggests you can just plug it in at any time like a normal USB device.

It's very easy to get this device confused. The manual suggests to leave it alone for 3-5 minutes for it to catch up to your inputs. Whats up with that?
There is no camera attachment for it, you can use the USB host to plug in a digital though.

This is the second Archos product I have owned with pretty much the same review. I had purchased the Jukebox multimedia 20 gig when it first came out.

I'm sure I'm missing some things, give me a few more days to play with it.

Mr. or Mrs. "Unimpressed"...

Not sure what you're talking about. I've had no problems multi-tasking (watching pictures and listening to music at the same time). The MP3 playback straight up is fine. The Opera browser is easy to find. You can turn of the wi-fi beaming application. The time is fine now if you get the latest firmware. I never have problem hooking it up to my laptop via USB.

All in all, I'm impressed with my new toy. Maybe you just got a "lemon".

Got a PMA400 here, review device and must admit, its currently the most versatile devices I've had in some to test drive.
It even supports external USB qwerty bords to be hooked up to it (even through a usb hub...)

So I must say its a killer device, just want to ad the abbilaty to call with it.

Hi
just wondered how would i set the sky channels to the archos tv channels?
