Can I play DIVX/XVID on 6630 ?

12 replies · 3,870 views · Started 28 February 2005

Hi folks,

I spotted the messages about SmartMovie but it was a little unclear. Do I need to buyt his program, install it on my PC and on the phone and use the PC convertor to recode videos?

Or could I just install the codec on the phone and use VirtualDub to reduce the size down and save as XVID again?

Im a little confused.

Many thanks,

Rikki

With Smartmovie you have to convert the video-stream to play
it back on your N6630.

With this program from Vikinggames, you can install the codec,
and just use e.g. Virtuadub as you prefer to downsize the video.

There is also a third solution which I have not tried yet..

Bare in mind the framerate is limited to 15fps on DVDPlayer
from Vikinggames. I am not sure about SmartMovie
from Lonelycatgames.

With the increased cpu speed of the N6630 and N6680/81/82
I would like to see Divx-players for Symbian which can manage
25/30 fps!!

Smartmovie can easily manage at least 24fps and that is tv quality!

hmm.. perhaps I will eat my words. 20 is the best I can get without lag, but its still astounding! I can't tell the difference on my pc. Use stoik video converter instead of the smartmovie converter.

Yep, I've converted films (24fps), TV rips (25/30fps) and miscellaneous clips at full frame rate and high bitrate, and all play perfectly with no lag or reduced frame rate whatsoever in Smartmovie :icon14:

Im stll a bit confused, can I use VirtualDub and everything else on the PC and load the files on the Nokia or do I need to install a program on the Nokia?

Thanks,

R.

Hey,

Yes, you do have to buy some software I'm afraid. Smart Movie is what you need, there is a trial which runs out after a set time so you can try it first to see if you like it.

Basically in the package you get the player & codec for the phone and also a dedicated converter to install on your PC for actually making the clips.
This produces quite good results, especially as on the 6630 you can have the bitrate quite high as the phone is more capable of handling them this way.

Personally I use the Smart Movie player on my 6630 and use Virtual Dub & XviD codec on the PC to make the clips I play. I have found this option so much better, the only drawback is the encoded clip is normally bigger in file size because of the extra quality.

In my opinion Smart Movie is by far the best app for movie playback, others have tried & got close but not close enough.

So far this is whats now holding me back with making some better settings to make better use of the 6630's power, as I have sold the 64mb dv rsmmc to get a bigger one in time.

How do you get Virtual Dub to find the xVid codec?

Also, If I use stoik video converter the converter struggles a bit to keep audio and video in sync but there is no lag on the 6630 when playing back.

If I convert the same file on virtual dub, the quality is worse but in sync on the PC, but the 6630 lags like mad! Why is 6630 strggling to playback the same bitrate, framerate and resolution (and audio)
file just because it was converted using a different converter.

Could you post some detailed instructions on using virtualdub?

ok, i downloaded and installed smartmovie and copied an .avi file to the phone via the phone browser but i cant browse for the file and all it finds are 2 demo.avi files. wht am i doing wrong?

thanks,

rikki

Hey,

Did you use the converter to make the .AVI file of did you just have one on your PC already? If so try converting with the convert first then send back to the phone.

mike_freegan :- Hey, sure no problems.
Virtual Dub is a little more involved than the LCG converter but worthwhile.
I have posted quite a lot of help & also my VD settings file on NokiaFree.org, sorry mods if this link is against the rules but there are no warez on it.
The direct link is here :- http://nokiafree.org/forums/t62688/h/s.html

It started off as a Helix Producer thread but changed to Virtual Dub, I am Coolice00 there.

Any other problems ask me, I'll help as much as I can.

Ian

LOL where on the phone do I send it to ? I used FEManager and found the Demo folder inside the phones memory but surely there is a way to access files outside this folder ?

R.

Hey,

What I do is copy & paste any Smart Movie files into the Video folder on C:

Then you can either go to gallery - video - then open the file or

Open Smart Movie & use the Browse Files option. Smart Movie will then find any file extensions associated with it.
