Unlike my 9290, the 9500 cover phone display does not include "Company Name" while in the "search contacts" mode.
It does, however, grant equal priority to: first name, last name, phone number, mobile phone number, etc.
So, when I scroll down, expecting to see a list of "Last Names " starting with "A", instead I see a list of phone numbers, no names attached, starting with "1".
This is arcane, especially with 1500+ contacts; and many of the contacts have only "Company" name (which the cover phone will not recognize at all). One-handed operation is impossible, unlike the 9290 (and every other Nokia phone that I've used).
Nokia customer support will not help, as I am in the US.
Has anyone else had this experience with the 9500? Is therer a work-around, or a fix?
FWIW, I have FW 4.40. Nokia has told me that I am not eligible for any FW upgrades because the product is n/a in the States.
I am grateful for any help.
TIA,
Brian
So when you start a search of your contacts from the phone side instead of seeing names you only see phone numbers, is that correct?
Are *ALL* of your contacts appearing sorted by number only? You can check this very easily by scrolling up when starting a search of your phone book (that should take you to your last contacts). The phone side doesn't show company names so if you want to have a company's phone number accessible from the phone side without having to remember its number to recognize it (how stupid does that sound? 🙄 ), you should enter its name in the Last (or First) Name fields instead of using the Company field.
Hope this helps!
EDIT: If you highlight one of the company phone numbers (the ones appearing as numbers only) and press the d-pad for details, you should see the company's name (still not convenient for a search though).

Yes, Neo. numbers only are listed for companies with no first name/last name contact info. Since I have several hundred of these, using scroll to reach last names (alphabetized) is not practical.
Also, when performing a Contacts Search , equal priority is given to first name and last name, making this search method cumbersome and unpractical.
Behaves a lot different than the 92xx range, which was a breeze to perform one-handed search when cover is closed (while driving).
Seems like a big step back from the previous models, rather than a refinement.
Thank you for the workaround suggestion of putting company names in the "last name" field. I will see if any other software or firmware-based solutions pop up before i go through re-entering the data to suit the communicator. May end up being the practical solution!
Many thanks.

Sorry, I wasn't sure whether only companies showed as numbers only or if you had that problem with people too so I was suggesting a way to check it out (fyi, if you want to scroll to the last contacts, scrolling up when you're at the top of the list takes you to the last contacts).
Regarding the search giving the same importance to first and last names, I have to agree this is stupid as in PDA mode you can change the settings to fix this. Unfortunately this does not affect the phone side (at least when I tried it didn't, I don't think rebooting the phone would have changed anything but I'll try again later). AFAIK, this hasn't been fixed in the latest firmware release either.
