.cdb data conversion for 9500

7 replies · 5,325 views · Started 03 March 2005

Hello folks-

recently I bought a 9500 after my 9210 (not the i) crashed miserably which is now in the trash.

Apparently I lost all the data, except a contacts database that I had transferred few weeks ago from 9210 to the memory card. I have managed to get this
contacts.cdb file from the memory card to my laptop.

My question:

Is there anyway I can xfer the contacts.cdb content to my new 9500. If not, is there anyway I can open the .cdb file on my laptop...any windows application that will allow me to convert this into vcf???

I am sure some of you may have experience with such unusual scenarios....the 9500 communicator does not detect data from 9210 memory card!

This is SOS...as I had 785 contacts in my old phone (and now on my memory card)

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Sincerely,

KISHORE

Perhaps PCSuite for the 9210 will open the .cdb file. From there, perhaps load it into Outlook, export as .vCard.

Use "Smart vCard" to import into 9500? Or use the PCSuite for the 9500 to collect contacts from Outlook?

Just guessing; I'm a Mac user so I've never enjoyed the convenience of PCSuite, but one would think that there would be a solution within PCSuite.

Good luck!

Well if there is no other solution, you can use Nokia 9210 emulator to at least read the contacts information

I used Data Mover to transfer my Contacts from 9210i to 9500.

Firstly the Infra Red connection seems appallingly weak and even with the phone right next to my 9210i the connection dropped during data transfer multiple times and had to be restarted.

I have 3 Contacts Databases and these transferred to my new 9500 but in transferring them Data Mover managed to jumble all 3 databases into one larger database mixing up all the entries in the process. How helpful is that? I then had to try to separate the entries into 3 separate bases item by item. As I was doing this, which is tedious and time consuming I switched to Telephone to check that all was OK and the base was accessible only to find that the phone crashed completely with a Kernel error, User Code 3.

USing PC Suite, if you remove the phone from its cradle, you break the data connection to the PC and then have problems making the connection again and invariably have to reboot the PC. It almost never reconnects correctly.

Having reconnected my phone, it appears that PC Suite can only see the main Contacts database. I have now my usual 3 Contacts Databases for UK, France and Spain, and it seems that PC Suite and Contacts Editor is completely unable to see these directories, and thus I am unable to edit these entries. Mine are stored on the MMC Card, to retain space in RAM, and Symbian allows you to specify this. Symbian enables the creation of personal contacts databases, yet it appears that Symbian is unable to view or access them. Not very clever, it seems to me.

Yes, databases are merged into one, but they are still separatable as the former databases members are grouped into the groups (with bracketted names). You can easily transform each group into a new database in three steps.

If you encounter error, something must be corrupted, in the database. But this is not normal behaviour.

Normally, Contacts app must see, and be able to open any of the databases, either in the memory (primary database), or on the MMC (secondary databases). If not, something is wrong.

Peter, thanks for the reply. Yes something must be wrong. I now have the latest V6.41.6 of PC Suite, and it still cannot see my databases. However I see this release has fixed the ridiculous issue that Contacts Editor screen was larger than my PC screen!!. It is now a wider shorter screen.
I did separate the data manually back into my 3 databases, but it is tedious that it had to be done manually.

I also tried copying the entire sub-database into the main Contacts database and still PC Suite cannot see the files.

Nokia Corp have just told me v4.51 Firmware is released for the UK and I have arranged to have my phone flashed tomorrow. So I shall see if this makes any difference. I am currently on V4.44.

It is not so tedious.
As the former databases are transferred into main database as groups, you can convert each of them as a block - in three steps.

1) Create new database (you can copy&paste the name from the group name, or write it manually).
2) In the main database, select the group you want to convert into new database, but don't open it - just select it. Press Menu->Move to...
Select the target (just created) database and press Select. Confirm moving selected group to the new database. Confirm removing original contacts.
3) As soon as operations is finished, open the new database, find the group definition (=name) select it (don't open it) and delete it. Don't worry, contacts (members of the group) will remain here.

As the result, contacts from the bracketted group are moved into new database - just as you had it in the N9210.

Repeat it for all other converted databases, if any.

Thank you guys for throwing light on this issue.
I am still not able to read the contacts file using any windows application (PC SUITE) included.

However, I finally managed to transfer the data to my 9500. Here's how I achieved it:

a) The data was on my MMC- from MMC I transferred it to the phone memory of a friend's 9210i

b) Used the 9500's "data collector" application and via infra red transferred the 9210i phone memory contacts to 9500.

I did face the kernel problem in 9500 in the Telephone application. I called up the Nokia helpline in Bangalor India (call center) and they were unable to help...it's a difft. story that they hardly know anything abt their own phones!!!!

Anyway, I fixed the Kernel problem by formatting the 9500. Nokia 9500 can be "made as new" "factory settings" by formatting-- remove the batteries and switch on the phone again. Before you get the NOKIA logo on the internal display keep pressing CTRL-SHIFT and F keys simultenously several times (abt 20 times) and it will then ask you if you would like to format your phone...Click yes and proceed...will take abt 5 minutes in all.

Remember YOU WILL LOOSE ALL YOUR DATA IF YOU FORMAT YOUR PHONE, SO DO BACKUP on your MMC.
Thanks again
