Restoring a 6600 without wiping the memory

Sorry if this has been covered before, I did do a search but couldn't find a sure answer. My phone screwed up a while ago, the old too much memory phone freezes thing (woulda thought they could have fixed that by now, used to happen to my 7650 too). Anyway, if I start the phone up it boots to the normal screen eventually, but then I get a system error message, and then there's no chance of doing anything.

My question is, would there be a way of getting the phone useable again (if only just to delete some things to make room) so that I don't have to do a full format and get rid of all my saved images and stuff? Cause it would be crap to lose them.

If that's not possible, what is the best format to do? I see a lot of different ones about!

Thanks very much
